429 vs. 460 what do I have?

Is there any way to tell the difference between a 429 and a 460
without removing a head and measuring the stroke. The reason I ask is I have either a 429 or a 460 but I'm not shure which it is. The valve cover sticker says its a 460 but the flexplate has 429 written on it with grease pencil and it appears to have different balancing holes drilled in it than the known 460 I have. Is there any way to tell by casting #s what it is. If there is I will get them and post them.

Casting Numbers is the easiest way to tell.

The 429 was discontined in what 71.

Block,Intake and Head numbers will do fine.

Went out to the barn and got the numbers, here they are.

Block = D1VE-6015-A2
Intake = D6VE-942? (the rest was ground off for some reason)
Heads = D3VE-A2A

Dont the 429 and 460 use the same block though ?

Also, I don't know if this means anything, but the starter looks like a GM starter with a Ford nose cone

One of the easiest, but may not be reliable since I have never verified it, but here it is.....

The 429 damper is closer to the timing cover than on a 460. The 460 used a spacer between the damper and the timing cover.

429 vs. 460 what do I have?

Just Strokin-
It does have the same spacer between the timing cover and the balancer that my other 460 has.
So it looks like it's pretty safe to say it's a 460.

Thanks guys

With the late casting number on the Intake, you can almost rest assured it is a 460, not always. The thing to do would be pull the oil pan and look for the crank number.

What's the motor out of? I do know of 429's being produced past 71' in heavy duty trucks.

I got it from a 76 Murcury Montego. The guy I got the car from said it originally had a 400M and he swapped this one in, but he did'nt know if it was a 429 or a 460 or what it came from originally.

Where are the #s located on the crank, are they on the flywheel end or do I have to remove the pan to see them ?
I'm not going to be back home untill friday, I'll check then.
