460 motor problems

I got a good deal on a 460 a few weeks ago. What I thought was a good deal anyway. I had the guy give me a 6 month warranty on paper with his signature. It was a freshly rebuilt 460 long block with lots of go fast goodies. I am anxiously awaiting all of my parts to get this thing going, when I decided to go out to the garage today and find TDC on #1 cylinder, so when dist. comes in this week I will be ready. Well I can only turn the motor a short way in either direction and then it feels like it is hitting something. I am not real sure, I just know that it won't turn past that point no matter how hard I try. The crank is not hitting on anything as far as I can see.

To top it all off, I tried to call the guy and ask him some questions, when I found out his !@#*#!! phone number has been disconnected. I know where he works so he will be getting a visit from me this week!!

Any suggestions on what to look for. I do not have an oil pan on it yet, and it is on a stand. I have looked it over real good and I can't see anything wrong. I am going to pull the heads off this week and do a little further investigating.

Thanks for any info, I will keep you all posted if I come up with anything - 68FORD

Take the push rods out and see if it turns a revolution.

* NOTE :Make sure the engine is right side up so you don't lose lifters.

If it turns at least One rev :
That would tell you a number of things

That either the push rods are too long or
the timing gears are installed wrong.

I pulled off all of the rocker arms, and removed all of the push rods. Still no different. Now what? Is this motor going to be a waste of time and money, since I don't know the guy and he obviously didn't know or care about what he was doing.
Please help

460 motor problems

If the crank is not hitting anything then the top of the pistons may be hitting the cly heads. You will have to pull the heads to check this out.
Just as a after thought there is nothing external that may cause a problem like a flywheel bolt jabbing against the engine stand

Removing the heads was going to be my next step. I don not have a flywheel mounted on the motor yet, but I have checked for other possible obstructions but nothing externally is hitting anywhere to make it stop.

Thanks for all the help. I will keep you posted if I find anything after I remove my heads. - 68FORD

just another thought...maybe a broken timing chain getting caught up between the gears and the timing cover?

I do not have a timing cover on the motor yet. Inspected the timing chain and gears and it all seems to be fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I have decided to take this motor to a good friend who has a shop that can tear it down and inspect and see what else may be wrong.

Since this guy screwed me once, I would feel better having someone I know and trust take a look at it before I go any further.

I will keep you posted and let ya'll know how it turns out. Thanks for all of the support.

460 motor problems

a friend of mine ran across this once. He had a 429. took the crank to the machine shop, when he got it back and put it together it did the same thing. took it back apart and found out that the machine shop had swapped his 429 crank for a 460 crank and the extra length of the throws were causing the pistons to go way above the deck of the block. So i guess what Im saying is not knowing exactly what you have, you may have a 429 block and some 460 parts mixed together that arent jiving.

I have already double checked the numbers on the block, crank, and heads, they all match up to a 460.

Thanks for the input. - 68FORD

Might be worth checking to see if the rings were gapped properly. I had an "expert" friend install pistons in an engine for me years ago and the idiot didn't gap the rings(.070 rings in a .060 bore, bad news). The engine was really "Tight" he said and that was "good". Yeah right. Several hundred dollars later, I did the job myself after rehoning the cylinder walls which were scored due to several broken rings.

Good Luck, hope this isn't the problem,

460 motor problems

Well, I finally got the motor over to a shop to check it out and they called me over there when they got it apart. One cylinder got filled up with water and it was solid rust from top of the piston to the bottom of the head! I couldn't believe all the rust in there. The rest of the motor was in really good shape and was indeed freshly redone.

I got a hold of the guy finally, who I bought it from and he is paying for it to get fixed. I took it to a machine shop last week to get that one cylinder sleeved. I am supposed to pick it back up this week and get back to work on getting it put in my truck.

I will keep you all posted as I go.

Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks for the update.

I bought a 429 in 1989 from 550 miles away from.

A friend handled the transaction.
The enigine was supposed to have been completely re-built with
15,000 miles on it.
It cost me $500 for an engine that was FULL of RUST.

I tried sueing him for mis-representation,
The Judge was on his side.

Apparently when someone advertises something that ends up different than the way they represent it to person that doesn't live in a humid part of the country. It's okay to lie.

I lost the case.

Buyer Beware, even with your friends helping.

Dennis
