homemade bumpers

so yea i posted this in the i think 97-03 f150 section but no response really, i was wondering if anyone could help me out, im wanting to build a front and rear bumper for my 2000 f150 4x4 reg cab longbed, and i was wondering if anyone had built there own and wut it looks like, on any vehicle really, i was thinking some 8 inch channel that is open face turned into the truck so you have a nice flat surface and then some pipe to bend around the lights or just a push bar, well thanks in advance

Here's what a 6" channel iron bumper looks like on a 70s truck.

Can't help you on a newer truck, though.

No. I hurried and just slapped it on there. I have always meant to pull it off and cap the ends and taper the bottom up at the ends. Something else always seems to come up, so I never got around to it.

I tucked it in close. There is only about 1/4" between the bumper and the bed.

i made a bumper for my 78, out of 10x4 1/4'' wall tubing definately too heavy for anyone not running at least 3/4 ton axles, but you could use smaller rectangle tubing like 2x6, cap and angle the ends, and use 2x2 square for a brush guard.

I didn't make this, but it is home made. (it came with the truck)

Tried to post pics but that didn't work, but if you look in my gallery you will find the bumper.

I have several pieces of medium duty truck frame rail burn off waiting for me to work on and turn into a bumper. I have done pipe in the past as well.

The bumper on my truck is homemade, but not by me. I got it from a friend. It's made with 1/2" steel in some places and 1/4" in others. It weighs about 200-300 pounds. I had to get extra leaf springs installed to get the front of the truck level again.

1/8 flatstock is fine for a bumper as long as its not a long stretch. On my rear bumper I used 3/16 which is a 9" drop, and is as long as the witch as the truck. Its not flimsy at all. Had a car hit it and did $10 damage tome(scraped herculinre off) and about $5000 to her brand new car. Headlight, front fender, creased both doors, rear fender

1/4 is for running into stuff. Anything bigger your asking for a lot unessesary weight unless your running BIG axles and Extra heavy duty suspension.

1/4" for winch cradles
3/16 for anything that mounts to the frame
