backfiring around 3500-4000 RPM

i just noticed this occurence on my truck. It is a 79 F250 4x4 with a 460 - 4 speed tranny.

I just got done fixing the ball joints ans replacing the front axle-shaft at my dads shop about 250 miles away. I let the truck sit for a few day, while I was on vacation and when i got back, i was driving my truck around town. It was acting really funny, when i was in fourth gear. When i accelerated to a certain RPM (around 2500-3000) it started stalling and then would get power back and do that until i let off the gas. But when i mashed on the gas, it would accelerate past 3000 RPM.....

Well i popped open the hood to take a look see. I noticed that someone (my dad) turned the coil 90 degrees. Instead of the coil pointing towards the wheel-well of the engine compartment, he had it facing the Valve cover, so the plug wire that runs from the distributor to the coil was resting on the valve cover. So I turned it back to hove i had it and it started to run as normal.... so i thought.

I was driving on the freeway this morning and noticed that when i was shifting from 3rd to 4th gear (running about 3000-4000 RPM) it started backfiring as i accellerated. It was a constant backfire. As i gave it more throttle, i reached a certain point (not full throttle) and it acted like there was no more power.

Sorry for the long drawn out explaniation......

Does anyone have any idea of what this could be?????

The coil or its high tension wire connection might be shorting out to the block.

This happened to me while driving my Mustang on the highway during a heavy rainstorm.
The water sprayed up under the hood and caused a short out of this and I ended up Blowing the seam of my Muffler.

It can happen.

I suggest having a look under the hood in the dark of night and rev it up looking for a little lightning bolt.
