Lets see,I have an 81 P/U withh a 300 as my daily driver.Had it now for 11 years.Just love it to death.I also have an 81 with a 302 that will be on the road soon.I love the 6 and if I had unlimited money would do a build like Ak Miller did in the late 60's.Don't have unlimited funds so the 302 gets the build and the 6 stays stock.

OK im a newbe but it seems like this post has turned in to a pissing contest. Do you think someone can answer a QUESTION? Try the clifford post to help out, not slice and dice I-6 / V-8 owners? Not tring to be a d - - - But the fact remains this is a 300 Fourm.

If the truck is a used as a fun truck or daily driver the 302 V8 is preferred with high ratio rear end.
Many aftermarket parts for the 302.

If the truck is used as a work truck for hauling with low ratio rear end, the 300 I6 is preferred.

One engine for life

I have owned and built a lot of Ford engines. My fav big block is 390. Fav small block 302. Favorite engine over all is 300 4.9L PERIOD.
im retiring next year and just bought my last truck and only vehicle. 1996 F150 5 speed 4.9 with 258000 miles at purchase and was a one owner.
Im going to build it old school to last the rest of my life. Torque for towing 5000lb camper and boat on top of truck. You can not beat the long life of a 300 and towing ability with any other Ford engine. I put Dart Windsor JR heads and cam and all the goodies on a 302. Top end power was awesome however it will still not tow like a stock 4.9-300 PERIOD

Meh. Aside from what you're going to say is "ease of working on" you're not going to gain anything by doing this. But its your truck, you do you.

I'm assuming you are going to bore the block and install new pistons?
Have you started the project yet?

If you're willing to put in the work, you can stroke a 300 to 5.1 with some welded LS or 351 heads and up compression, change your pistons etc and get 400+ft/lbs and 300+ hp.

Front engine dragster love using the 300i6 to make 650-700hp N/A. Change the heads and you open up a world of possibilities, and can turbo them to make seriously power.
After my 6.8v10 c4 project is done I'm gonna build a monster 300 i6 turbo to put into a work truck

And if you put a newer 5 speed behind a mildly built 300 you can tow about 7-8k lbs. Which is more than enough for the majority of people
