Many Questions

Ok, here we go,
I've got what I thought was a 460, but now I'm not so sure. C8VE-E I believe is what is stamped on the block, if I remember correctly. 429/460 I really don't care. I just don't want to mess it up. So, what size and type Flywheel do I use to run it with my C6. How do tell the difference between the different types of flywheels? It will be going into my 1986 Bronco, C6 and NP208 transfercase. Also, this motor still has the original crank mounted power steering pump. I want to remove this to run a conventional power steering pump and front pulley assembly. Can I use any 429/460 damper? As you can tell by now I am new to this! Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

A 460 <

The main difference is in the heads not the block.

For an automatic it's called a FLEXPLATE
For an standard tranny it's called a FLYWHEEL.

Terminology really does make a difference if you're ordering one or buying one.

If you don't have it already, you will need a Torque convertor for an early 429/460.

Post Many Questions

Dennis,
Thank you for your response. Since I've already proven my ignorance, I guess I'll just keep the stupid questions coming.

The motor I have appears to be stock. All the codes on the block, heads and manifold match (C8VE). I know there are different flexplates out there, i.e. internally balanced, externally balanced, etc. How do I know which one to use? I have a flex plate but it did NOT come with the motor. I want to make sure that I don't use something that is going to rattle my motor apart.

Next, just out of curiosity. What is the difference in torque converters for early 429/460 and later models? Once again, I have a new one that came with my newly rebuilt tranny but I'm not sure it will be the correct one.

Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks
Dave

Many Questions

I'll get back with more info.

The difference between the two TC's is the pilot bushing area,of the crank. The Older ones are smaller than the newer ones.
You will have the smaller of them.

Many Questions

Concerning the flexplate, I just went through the same thing for my internally balanced '69. I went to my local auto parts store and bought a OEM for $25. I told them the year, they ordered it and it arrived that afternoon. If your looking for a performance flexplate, look for a SFI spec. Try this site (www.bmconverter.com). They also have converters, dampers, etc. I also saw some on ebay for about $50. I would have went this route but am quickly running over my budget after my rebuild. Hope this helps some.

C8VE refers to the year. C8= 68. This is the year of casting. if it came out of a Lincoln, it is a 460. The differences between a 429 and 460 are crank and pistons. Look at the crank(if possible) check the 3rd counterweight from the front(on the flat spot) for the casting #. If it is 2Y,2YA,2YAB or 2YABC it is a 460 crank. If it is 4U or 4UA it is a 429 crank. I'll try to get a couple of pics of a crank and post them here for you to see later today. I'm not exactly sure, but I believe you would have to change the timing cover to convert to a normal P/S setup. All 429/460's prior to 79 were internally balanced. In 79 they went to external balance on the 460's. As Dennis said, there are two different torque converter pilot sizes, a 1.375" used on small blocks and 351m/400 and 429/460 and a 1.850" used on FE's(360,390). I think the early 429/460's used the larger pilot size. The TC in my 78 2wd w/460 has the smaller pilot.

Many Questions

Wow,
Thanks for all the info. You guys can't know how much you're helping me out. I really do appreciate it.

Now, back to the questions. HE HE!
Would I be able to easily change to a more modern timing cover, if necessary? Or, would I have to change the timing gear as well.
Thanks again.

Dave

You should be able to change the timing cover to a newer one without any other mods. While you have the cover off you might as well change the timing chain. Look for a timing chain set for engines from 68-71 as this is not a "retarded" set. The newer timing chain sets are set up to retard the timing 8 degrees.

Try this link for the timing cover. http://www.stevensparts.com/TIMING%20COVER.htm
I bought a new one through these guys for $118. My original had the off the crank pump setup (check the pics in my user gallery of the original restored engine setup and after I rebuilt it with the new cover). I went through 4 local junkyards trying to find a decent one. When I called, they said they had one for me and when I got there they either had broken bolts or corroded thru in some spot or a broken ear, etc. Paid a premium but just got tired of running around like a chicken with its head cut off looking. Got better ways to burn up my Saturdays. If you do go to the junkyards, give it a good looking over before you buy, they are 20-30 years old.

I'm looking for the harmonic balancer next. Was looking at a fluid damper but I don't know if I really need it. Lots of $$$ for the ones I've seen so far. I saw some chromed out stock dampers somewhere online. Looked pretty. I'll try to find the link for ya as I am trying to find it myself (again). I think they were around $90.
