Is This True?
I'm a member of mercurycougar.net and got a post in reference to my '63 F100. Can someone confirm this to be true or tell me of sources to back up what my fellow cougar member is saying? Thanks good people!
Nice! Looks a lot like my old '64, only mine was a lot plainer. Yours is a pretty rare truck. Sometime during '63 Ford realized that buyers weren't taking to the unibody design and they had to offer a regular, non-unibody wide bed to keep from losing customers. Unfortunately they didn't have a separate styleside bed to match the then-current cab so they were forced to use the '57-'60 design bed as a stop gap, even though it didn't match the lines of the cab. For '64 they had a matching bed which was used until the bodystyle was phased out for '67.
I have no idea of numbers produced, but '63s still sporting their original "mis-match" beds are a bit of a historical oddity and certainly not seen much anymore.
One thing I remember is that trucks from those years are simple and built tough. No plastic anywhere. About the only things that can kill one are rust and total neglect. Take care of it and it'll outlive any of us.

Another Cougar / F100 combo owner
I recently joined the F100 club with a 63 as well. I have the old style bed on mine but don't know the rarity. Hell, I don't know much about the truck at all.
My other oldie is a 67 Cougar; black vinyl over white body. Over at mercurycougar.net, I post as TxCougar67 but lately I can't pull up the webpage from home. It sucks cuz I can only scratch half of my old ride itch.
I guess I will have to break down and find someone more computer savvy to help me out.

The 1961/66 F100/250 4WD Styleside pickups (exc 1966 F100 4WD) all used the 1957/60 Styleside bed. The 1961/66 F350 Stylesides used 1957/60 beds.
In 1964, Ford introduced a new Styleside bed that matched the lines of the cab. This bed was used on 1964/66 F100/F250 2WD and 1966 F100 4WD.

Hey Beatup63...thanks and welcome to the club too. I just decoded my vehicle which was the first step for me in learning more about my beauty.
Nice to see a fellow merccougar member here too...I'll look out for you over there. Next step for me on the cougar is brakes.

Based on survival rates for forty year old vehicles, the remaining quantity is around 10%.
So, whatever model you have, prolly 90% of them are long gone.

The Ford production figures I listed are from the: Standard Catalog of Light Duty Ford Trucks 1905-2002. krause.com ISBN: 0-87349-411-3.
If you're a Ford Truck Enthusiast, I heartly recommend this book. It'll answer many questions you have. The book includes: factory photos, lists of the many accessories Ford offered, chassis & engine ID, VIN decodes, the colors available, historical tidbits, yadda yadda yadda. A roaring bargain for less than 30 bucks.
