Front oil seal on a 460?
This is kind of a dumb question but I am wondering if somebody could tell me which way the seal goes in on a 460 timing cover? I sent the cover out to be cleaned and never bothered to look at the old seal and it seems that the chiltons manual doesn't show the right way either, it just shows a picture of the special tool over the seal it self. I would really appreciate some help.
Thanks,
JD

When you put the seal in from the back side of the cover you will want to be able to see ( the open part of the seal ) the spring around the seal lip when you look at it. The enlosed part of the seal goes out to the front of the cover. Which will put the lip to the oil like merc said in the above post. Drive it in flush.
