swap a 360 for a 460
Hi guys. I'm new to the board and had few questions about a truck I might purchase. It is a 75 f100 4x4 shortbed with a 4 speed. It currently has a 360 that I would like to swap for a 460. I am mostly concerned about the bellhousing bolt pattern and the motor mounts.
Also the transfer case dosent have neutral or 4 low. Are these common to these older trucks, are they reliable or hard to find parts for?
How common is a shortbed 4 wheel drive. I cant recall seeing very many of them?
Pordon my ignorance,I just havent been around a lot of the 70's fords.
I have had an 88,90,and my current 92.Hopefully I will add this one to my garage.
Thanks in advance

Why not turn your 360 into a 390 or a 428? The FE series engines have bolt patterns that differ from any other engine. The 460 is bigger and cheaper to build but you are going to have to figure in tranny replacement costs and find out how many mounting mods you will have to make. I doubt you are ignorant but if you don't know a lot about the truck you are in the right place! Welcome to FTE!

You should be able to get a 351m bellhousing which is common to bolt to your trans. You will be able to use your 360 flywheel on the 460. Ilearned about using the 360 fw on the 460 here and am in the process of doing it. I dont know about the strength of that t case though. You may opt for a complete 4speed t case from a m model to do this swap.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-May-02 AT 03:49 AM (EST)]2WISE4AGM, It probably wouldn't be too hard to come up with a rebuildable 390 for your truck. You have to keep in mind on a 460 swap you will need access. brackets and many other things you don't count on. The 390 would be a drop in and you can keep your brackets and exhaust and oil pan & sump. You won't be hunting anything. Even when you do your homework well, something always sneaks in there on you. If that sounds like experience talking, It is.
