Help! Motorcraft 4350 carb tech question

This is for those carb gurus! (and those with the spec books!)
I need the clearance measurement for the metering rod adjustment.
It is the clearance between the hanger and top of vaccuum cylinder.
None of my books seem to have it.

Help! Motorcraft 4350 carb tech question

You are in luck. I had the same question a couple of months ago and I canvased half of the planet to find the answer. Here is the best answer I got:

Hi Doug,

The measurement that my shop foreman gave me is, 3/16" from the top of the metering rod hanger to the top of the main body. If you have any more questions please give David a call at 770-944-3511 Monday - Friday 8 - 5 EST.

I also got this answer:

You need 1/4 of an inch between the bottom of the hanger and the top of the
airhorn assembly. When the power valve is fully depressed.

The overwhelming advise I got was to ditch the 4350 and go with a different carb. Apparently they are poor carbs with cronic flooding problems. I ended up not rebuilding the carb and going with an edelbrock performer intake and carb. WOW. What a difference.

Hope this helps you some,

Doug

Help! Motorcraft 4350 carb tech question

Hi Doug. This info helps me a lot! Especially the part about getting a new carb!!!

I have it running better than I have ever seen it run, and yet it still has the hesitation that other forums also said it is known for (Jeep forum; 4350 apparently on their old 360's and 401's)
I am hoping to find a decent carb somewhere like the wreckers or swap meet. I am on a budget right now. Wht carb do you recommend? How about CFM?
Am I stuck with a spreadbore carb, or will any square bore adapter plate work, regardless of what make vehicle it came from?
I just wasted 45 bucks on a carb kit, plus 40 bucks on a gallon of carb soak (still have the smell in my garage!) And I didn't end up with much better results.
I am hoping to continue using the stock D6XX intake on the 460.
Thanks for your help!
Mark

Help! Motorcraft 4350 carb tech question

Well, I'm very far from being an expert, but I can relate my personal experience. I went with the edelbrock 2166 intake and 600 CFM performer carb. I am happy with my choice for my application. My motor is stock and I tow with the truck often. The low-end power is awesome (what I wanted), but the power curve flattens out quite a bit above 65 mph. If I had it to do again, I would probably go with the 700 cfm version. I can recommend the edelbrock carbs. Easy install, and worked perfect right out of the box. I paid $200 for the carb, which was a factory rebuilt unit. As far as your intake, depends on the year of the engine/truck. I think what you want is a 79 or newer version of the intake to be able to fit the newer carbs. If you have an older intake, you might look for an Autolight 4100. Everything I hear and read says these are awesome carbs. Older, but still holds its own with the newer carbs. I can relate to being out the money for the kit and cleaner (and the smell). Same thing happened to me. Seems like everytime I try to save a buck, or put a bandaid on something, I end up spending more money/time in the end. Now I just wait until I can afford to get the right stuff (read $) and do it once and do it right.
Good luck!

Doug
