460 instead of a 400

I'm thinking of replacing my 400 with a 460. I wondered what is the power differance. The torque perhaps. Thanks a bunch.

Depends on the year of the 460, but more torque and HP. The 400 has a 2 barrel, right? And the 460 has a 2 plane intake manifold, and a decent size 4 barrel. I know there are a few people who like 400's, but many of them in 78-79 Bronco's were pulled and replaced with 460's. Haven't heard anyone wish they would have kept their old 400

Yea, the poor old 400's- They all poor performers due to the low compression. Use some flat top pistons to raise the compression and mild cam and I think you will be very surprised at the power the 400 can bring.

True,

But if you going to spend the money rebuilding an Engine.. rebuilt the 460! Much more reliable engine, better oiling... etc.

Just my $0.02

Yes, the 460 has the Cleveland style heads, with good flow rates and valve sizes. The 351M 400M has gone away from the Cleveland style internals. It is harder to work out parts with the 400, as you need to run 351C pistons with bushings in the rods, and pin retainer groove work... You will get better compression choices this way.
The 460 is supported quite well, and everything is bolt-on goodies.
I like the M's; been running a 351 for over 500,000 miles with not so much as a gasket replaced on motor or trans! But, the 460 I have just sounds easier to work with, and I have always had 351C, 351M, 400, and 390/410 engines. The 460 researches to be a simple upgradeable motor. Pretty easy to find them still.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-May-02 AT 01:16 AM (EST)]Glenn, Saw your response to 460 instead of 400 (dated 22 May)and noticed that you have a 72 F-250 crewcab 4x4. I have the same truck(short bed) and have never seen another. I am intrested in your trucks history.

By the way my 300 six was replaced years ago with a 351M-400. The 400 just died. I will be installing a 460 next week. I had to buy a heavier flywheel to adapt to my four speed. Not sure if the motor mount towers used for the 400 will work on the 460??? Any idea

Yea, kinda funny. It has always been my favorite truck - 4x4 CrewCab Highboy- I was looking for one about 5 years ago and found a couple around Spokane, WA (where I live) but of course no one would even think about selling them. We have this huge truck dealership here in town called Truckland, I stopped by there and saw the most beautiful truck I have ever seen. It was a early seventies CrewCab 4x4. Jet black, red interior, custom seats, killer stereo, pumped 460. And only around $12,000- Hahahahaa- Whoooo, hold on! Then and there I had to have one. It looked so much better, beefier, different than all these new crew cab driving around today, looking almost identical to each other. Looking off and on for the next few years, didn't find anything I could afford or liked for that matter. Then one day at work a few months ago, I was talking to the new guy at work, we were talking trucks and I explained to him what my ultimate truck would be. No kidding, he says "I have one" I said "No WAY?" Sure enough, his wife wanted to sell it because she wanted another horse for the kids. He said he would never sell it to anyone that wouldn't appreciate it. I know, long story. Basically He sold me the truck, extra bed, extra rear doors, 9000lb winch, new engine, extra windshield, extra 69' grill, new floorboards-for $2500. So now, of course I just pump money into it. I have two new seats from a Toyota Tacoma (T-100) front and back- Fit beautifully. Tinted windows, polished alum wheels, 285 tires, alum tool box and rails. Just needs paint now and an AOD tranny. Can you tell I love this truck? Best of all, It rides very nice and gets 19mpg.
