Sport-Trac Power & mileage with a 4.0L?

Hey Guys,

I'm doing some research in preparation to replace my current Ranger (great truck!) with something in the 4-door category. Looking at the Sport Tracs and want some feedback on how the 4.0L is in these compared to the 4.6 V8.

I'd like to hear from some 4.0L owners.

Thanks,
CMOS

I'm not a sport trac owner but the 4.0l in both OHV and SOHC are good motors, the SOHC motor has more power but both do exceptionally well.

I went from a 97 Ranger extended cab 4.0 to a 01 Sport Trac 4.0 to a 03 Sport trac with the 4.0. Only had the 01 for about a month (long story). The 97 and 01 both had the OHV 4.0. I thought they where both good running trucks but I do like the 03 SOHC better. If you are inclined to put your foot into it and wind it out the rev limit is definately higher and in my humble opinion makes for a bit more fun.

What kind of mileage did you experience with the 4.0?

You can usually expect around 20MPG if your not a lead foot.

I'm in western PA so there is a lot of hills and stop and go. 03 sport trac gets 15 mpg in every day driving and 21 on the highway. Whats scary is my 06 EB with the 4.0 gets 13 around town.

A young friend of mine wrecked his Escort and replaced it with a 01-03 Sport trac with the 4.0 eng and claims the all around mileage is only 14 mpg hand calculated combined city/hwy. He sez quite a downer compared to the Escort.

This the reason for this thread: Smaller engine with less power = engine works harder = worse or same mileage as the 4.6V8.

More input anyone?

Got a 02 Explorer 4x4 4.0, mileage 17 city, 21 hghway, 124k, good on power/with overdrive. If you run hard , bad gas mileage, drive normal, good mileage. My 2 cents.

I'm not far from Saxonburg. I work in Creighton and live in Allegheny Twp. All my Explorer's have the 3.73 gears. I only wish I could get that kind of milage!

I have 3.27's in my 92 and I think the same applies for the 96 but can't look at that right now.

Some follow up:

If/when I look at Sport Tracs later this year I'll be looking at 2005's and 2007's - I understand they didn't make them in 2006???? Correct?

Which 4.0 is in the 05-07's? The SOHC?

What year did the 4.6 become available in the Sport Trac?

What rear end gears are typical and available in these year models?

Thanks,
CMOS
