thoughts on dodge's rambox (fender storage)?

i'm all ford, but i'll be the first to admit that it's a pretty sweet idea

New RamBox storage system is available only for crew cab models; each lockable, waterproof bedside box has 4.3 cubic feet of storage, and there's a drain plug if you want to use them as tailgate coolers.
i guess all you're really losing is some bed space. if it was an option on a ford, would you get it? lose too much bedspace?

I saw on the CNBC Detroit Auto Show program that the box holds 222 cans of iced beer. Woooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooo. Now that's one helluva tail gate party. I mean side gate party.

The literature says that the bed will still will hold 4x8 sheets of plywood between the side walls. I think its a very good idea from Dodge. The only problem I can see is if you have a tonneau cover. And I guess you could always take the tonneau cover off.

It's great that the manufacuturers are getting back into extra storage.

The Ram's top rail storage is cool, but looks like it does eat away at the box capacity a little. A basket ball is about 10" across? So the bed rail on the rail storage equiped trucks must be at least 14" wide?
The Ridglines is heeoog, but inaccessable, if there's a load in the bed.

I'd like to see some better pix of the F150's Side Bed Storage.

They seam to be doing more and more design in target for us younger kids. Like the Caliber having flip down speakers in the lift gate and a real working cooler in the back. That stuff is sweet, to bad IMO the trucks are junk lol

If I could still ahve my roll top cover, then GREAT idea. If they had not hindged it from the inside perhaps? But then you have the seam on top and more prone to leakage? I wouldn't trade my box cover for it...

And guys that like to have tool box's in front of box will be worried about the fact it runs nearly all the way to the front.

But I guess they made it big enough to store golf clubs = the length

I need the extra bed width and space. Its not for me and I wouldn't buy it if Ford offered it. Its similar to the "Trunk" in that wanna be Truck, the Honda Ridgeline. May be ok for a Grocery getter but if used like a truck it will get dirty and beat up quick.

I like it. I use my trucks to pull trailers so these would be a nice way to organize. I'd have to see what it looks like in person, though. I like the look of my diamondplate toolboxes on the bed so I think I can do without it for now.

I use my trucks for hauling in the bed. The crossover tool boxs don't work for me. They eat up to much in bed space. So, using the space wasted between the outside of the box and the frame is a great + for peeps like me.

When I load mine it has a 36" Power troweler, 5' rolls of welded wire mesh,(uses the full 8'box length) steel stakes, wood stakes, blah, blah, blah.

Usually, right around 1200 lbs on the way to the job site.

I have a side tool box on the 85, it works pretty good, but limits access over the bed rails.

I think it is a neat idea, for light used trucks I think it would come in handy. One thing that concerns me though is the strength of those tops for trucks that get used pretty heavily. Has anyone seen how much weight they can hold? Are they plastic tops? I can just see setting a load down across the bed or jumping in the side of the truck and bang, it breaks. But like I said for light use, I would have to consider it. Just my 2 cents.

For instance when I go Ice fishing my portable shacks fit crosswise in the bed (Narrower at the bottom so fits between the wells) and the space that the compartment takes up would not allow the wider top part to fit. I also have my tool box, slide in hitch, rope, chains and such laying beside all that. (Front and Bavck of wells) Those spaces are nice for fitting buckets in the corners too. I pack the back good for a trip out on the ice.

The corner pockets are also nicer for fitting pieces of wood, steel and etc crosswise in the bed and still be able to shut my Undercover Tonneu.

When I take my vacations up to Canada a couple weeks a year the bed is packed, I can use every single inch.
