I think I ran a wheel bearing dry on the front end of my 2001 Ford Excursion. Do I need to replace the outer axle stub when I replace the hub/bearing assembly? Where's the least expensive place to buy one?

I think this has the Dana 50.

Been there, done that. Mine was worn .030" due to running on the dry needle bearing.

You can get the stub shaft by itself, though the Ford parts guy won't be able to look it up. Give them this part number:
4C3Z3B387AA
You'll need the U-joint as well:
F81Z3249AA

 

Least expensive ? Salvage yard .

 

I don't want to chance getting damaged goods and having to do the job again. Where's the least expensive place to get new ones?

Fat Boy, I don't. But, I do know the Excursion uses a 50, I was told by the dealer (an apparently very knowledgeable fellow) that this is used on "all Super Duties", and these fits perfectly fine on my '00 X.

Plus, I got that info from another guy with an F-350 ('02, I think) so I'm confident it's a common part for the whole line. - GA

For the outer axle stub, 4C3Z3B387AA, these will work on 4x4 Excursions? Also, is the u-joint needed or can you reuse your existing one?
