I've gone to auctions that were either on old farms or some old guy who died with a couple of acres of old trucks. Almost at every one there are two or three people that buy up all of the old iron. They're always scrap dealers who seem to have bottomless pockets. They buy up everything, a lot of pieces are either somewhat restoreble or have some good parts. It's sad.
There one plus to having all the scrap dealers at the auctions. If I see a junker that has some parts I want I let the scrap dealers bid against each other for it, watching who wins the bidding. I then go over the to winner and offer him maybe 5%-10% of his winning bid for the couple of parts I want. The truck might sell for $200 and I'll offer the $10-20 for part, knowing it's worth at least $100. The guy will usually give me a look like I'm nuts but he's happy to get the extra cash in his pocket and I only take a few pounds off of the vehicle, which doesn't deminish the scrap value. I also don't have the hassle of paying more for the vehicle than I think it's worth, I don't have to load a rusty hulk on my trailer, pull it home, strip it down and get rid of what's left. This has worked every time I have tried it.

55 - what do you do for the post office? I was a carrier 4 1/2 years, now I'm an Electronic Tech for a P&DC...just curious...
Yeah, I know about the "goobers". They drive around here, looking for scrap, stopping everywhere "Hey man, you going to throw that away???". They will take anything! I had two old air conditioners, that I couldn't get rid of because of the gas - they took those. But, they also took an old outdoor grill I had, that the burners were shot, and just plain dangerous. They even climbed the roof for one of the industrial air conditioners. Several days later, my wife told me she saw the grill up at the local "rip-you-off" auto shop, that had ripped my daughter royally. Needless to say, we don't talk to the shop, or I would have told them that they really shouldn't use that grill.
Gotta love karma!

i worked in the main plant here in springfield for 2 years as a ptf after i gave up road driving now for the last seven i've been driving for contractors . yeah i gotta watch 'em when they ocassionally slide through here as they have tried to take stuff for the trucks out of them before . they dont normally come around here but with the scrap prices up well my rusty ol' trucks draw 'em like moths to a flame . oh yeah theres a fella over on osr just got an f-8 dump truck of 51 vintage . he may be sliding through here , but he bought it to save it from the crusher and was talking about selling it . it's freakin ' cool and except for some glass looks like it's all there . oh yeah it fits in with the redneck theme of me and the old fords , its painted camo . i asked him how much and trying to figure out where to get it . but i got a line on a 61 unibody that runs and needs a throwout bearing ............................ i may need a dog house to sleep in .

Did you see the rest of the junk this guy is trying to sell? Unbelievable!! Did you notice that he doesn't have a single bid on anything....not even the pool table!!! I used to think the average American was pretty dumb, but now my opinion has changed. Even the E-Bay community recognizes that this is overpriced junk!!!
