Looking to bid on crew cab.

Need some advice. Going to bid on a pickup next month , and would like some input on value. Its a 1978 ford f 250 custom crew cab 4x4 short box. About 75,000 miles on pickup. Has a new 460 with only 200 miles on it. Four speed. Body ,grill , short box, tailgate all no damage or rust. I'm not real big into pickups, although this one strikes me. What kind of valut do you put on it???

Its really hard for anyone on the forum to give you a reliable value per say. If we cant see/hear the truck it is hard to estimate the value. How is the paint? 4x4 trucks in the 70's didnt come factory with a 460 so was it a clean install? does the 4wd work? Interior shape? How is the overall paint? There are alot of things to take into effect when placing a value on a truck this old. But i would guestimate somewhere in the $3500-$5000 for a collector. If its just a bunch of regular Joes bidding it might not even come close to that.

The paint is green and white with minor scratches. No body damage. Back seat had the bottem half of the seat recovered. They told me it was a 460, but he was just an employee. What would be stock?

IF the people bidding on it do not know what it is possibly worth, it might fetch 2K. 460s have a bad reputation now that gas is $3 a gallon, and never going down. If a guy who knows its worth is there, expect to pay 6K at least. If you are in area where good old rust free 4x4 trucks are hard to find, expect to pay more.

Look at the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) = 4th digit is the engine code.

1977/79 F100/250 4WD & 1979 F350 4WD used the following:

B = 300 I-6 / H = 351M 2V / S = 400 2V

No 460 4WD's till 1983.

Inspect before you buy, forget about the back seat upholstery. Look underneath at the frame and body for signs of rust.

Pay close attention to the cab mounts, radiator support, rear spring hangers.

Look for signs of fresh undercoating that can hide rust issues.

Use a magnet to detect bondo.

White exterior paint is the best color to hide bondo and wavy sheetmetal, so sight along the body sides for signs of these things.

DO NOT inspect at night, or in the rain...especially under flourescent lights.

The worst turd in the world will look like a million bucks under that type of lighting, at night when the vehicle is wet.

Doors were locked, so I couldnt see the vin. Did get the hood open, and it's a 400cc--not a 460.

From the factory, there was tags (that have the VIN on them) on the firewall, near the brake booster to the left, and on the lower bulkhead of the bed. There is probably another, but all I know about is the two.
