Do the '02 7.3's have cavitation?

I have to replace the hoses and would like to know if I need to but that "stuff" to prevent cavitation.

Thanks

I think '02 is when they started with the gold coolant (100K miles) which does not require an additive.

If you have green coolant then you do have to use additive.

Then yours requires the additive.

2002 trucks that were built in Kentucky (as indicated by the "E" in the vin number) all came with gold coolant. Trucks built elsewhere did not have gold coolant until later in the model year.

Coolant

Gold (yellowish to me) colored Coolant = no additives required.

Green Coolant = Yes - need to add SCA

Your truck is near the changeover point from green to gold by Ford. If you are still on your original coolant now would be a good time for a flush & refill anyway. So if you have green you could switch to the G-05 (Gold) - just remember to get all of the green out during the flush.

Do you need to buy the coolant from Ford or is there an off-the-shelf brand that will work? Mine's the gold version and I've noticed that it's getting low.

If you are going to fully flush and replace the coolant you can use the red stuff. It's good for something like 300K miles. I believe you can get it a Wallmart.

You can get the concentrate at Napa, or Rotella ELC which is the same thing from a local dealer that you can find on their website.

One new thing that occurred to me recently is that if you switch to ELC, you don't need the coolant filter. That's because ELC does not contain any SCAs whatsoever, which is what "drops out" of the liquid making the sand that needs filtered. It's not clear on the Final Charge website, but they tell you to replace the filter with a blank when you swap.

Here is the Final Charge website where you can read all about ELCs:
http://www.finalcharge.com/

And here is Rotella's site on the subject:
http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=rotella-en&FC2=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/leftnavs/zzz_lhn2_0_0.html&FC3=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/dir_products.html

EDIT: Here is another good site I found. Pretty much cuts to the chase:

I thought the "sand" was also from the casting of the block. Not correct?

Don't know about that -- I would think a few flushes would have all that junk out of there. You can see from this pic what drop out looks like (clicky for a bigger version):
