I am in the process of changing my clutch on my truck. I can't get the pilot bearing out!! I first tired the grease and dowel trick, didn't not work. So i got a puller attachmend for a slide hammer... I got the inside of the bearing out now I just have the race to get out. I broke two different attachments for the puller!! I'm not sure what else to try! Is there a trick? I'm not sure if you can use heat or not, any ideas? Thanks guys, i'm getting very frustrated
How do you freeze it in grease? Also what will the grease do if I'm trying to pull it out? I don't have the actual bearing part in there anymore so I can't do the dowel trick.
Actually that's good that you pulled the center part of the bearing out. That allows more room for the puller.
Here's a pic of the backside of the pilot bearing. You can see there are two notches on the back of the bearing so a two jaw puller can be used.
Here's the puller/slide hammer I purchased. It's a OTC 1172 and sells for $65.00. If you do a Google search you'll see the jaw specs. as the jaws are spread they also lock in place.
I believe Autozone also has a puller that will work that you can borrow.
hmm well the tools are probably cheap ones... but if i get another tool a little bit better one do you think some heat would help? or would that affect the seal?
I wouldn't use heat because it could melt the rear main seal. You could use a dremel or a die grinder and cut the race in half or even one cut across half of the bearing could make it easier to pull out.
You could spray the bearing race with PB Blaster and let it soak for a couple of hours.
I purchased a universal puller with differrent legs from Harbor Freight and it was junk so I ended up buying the OTC 1172. Sometimes it pays to purchase a quality tool for a specific purpose.
