i have a 2000 explorer 5.0 awd. i want to disconnect the front wheel drive because it is making a knocking sound all the time when i tow a trailer or with out a trailer going easy on the gas around 35mph. does anyone know if it would hurt anything if i disconnected it, seeing as how i have full time awd? thanks for any replys
I can't say whether it would hurt anything, but when my 4x4 control module went out in my wife's '02, I only had 2wd for about 8 months and nothing was damaged. Changed the module and it's working fine again (as well as the AWD).
Sorry, not much info but figured I'd throw it out there...
I don't recomend it.
1: The front axle is used to keep an Explorer in park. Remove it and it will roll. THe parking brake barely holds the Explorer itself, let aloan a trailer hooked to it.
2: The AWD case usese clutches to transefer power to the front axle. Ypour likely to fry them if you pull the front drive shaft.
It's possible that a u-joint is going out. AWD use a CV joint on the front drive shaft where it bolts to the transfer case that will make a horrible noise when it goes out.
It shouldn't hurt it, but Moutain man may have something there that it could damage the internal clutches in the t-case if it has them, I don't know alot about the AWD transfercase, if you ever decide you don't like the AWD swap out that t-case for a 4X4 t-case so you can be in 2wheel when you want and be in 4hi or 4low when you want.
If you drive with no front driveshaft you WILL damage your t-case. With the front shaft removed the viscous coupling will be constantly slipping and will burn up. As stated earlier the vehicle will roll in park.
well thanks everyone. i'll leave it the way it is and either find a way to get it fixed or .....do any of you know how hard it would be to convert it from awd to 4wd"4x4" ?
You would have to get a transfercase from an F-150 not sure of the years right now. I think 97 Mountain man knows so just wait for his response unless someone else here knows.
You will need a manual 4406 case from a 1997-2003 F150 and the drive shafts from the same years but from an Expidition with a 4.6
It's possible that it is the front differential itself. It is o.k to remove the front d-shaft for diagnosing the problem. Remove it and drive it for a few miles to see if the noise is still present.
How many miles do you have on your Explorer?

I have 86480 mi on my explorer 5.0. I am going to look into this 4406 case it shouldn't be that hard to find but the expidition witht the 4.6 mite be. Most of those i have seen have the 5.4 in them. I have found a lot of places online selling a transfer case for awd 5.0. But they are all used and out of a totaled x so i don't think that they would be any better so i have pasted all them up until i can find a new one or a 4x4 conversion.
