Scrapping noise when accelerating

73 302 4x4 truck 4 speed(first is granny gear)

When I am accelerating I hear a scraping, similar to a metal pole being drug across cement. This happens only when accelerating in second and third gear. If I maintain my speed, it does not do this, if I am in 4th and accelerate and am going faster than 35 I do not hear it unless I am pushing the truck more than usual.

The truck drives the same as it always does, just have the noise. its a cotinous noise that does not fluctuate if I maintain a steady increase in speed, if I accelerate more, It gets louder.

Any Ideas?

Sounds like bearings, drain your trans and look for evidence in the drained oil

First gear.... not matter what vehicle it is in has ALWAYS been considered GRANNY Gear

It is only a slang term for going slow like an old lady would in her sunday drive.

Amazing maddhatteraz! I'm having a very similar problem on my 428 auto. Just as you describe, when accelerating. What direction do you think the noise is coming from? Engine?, Tranny? Left? Right? I've looked at loose starter bendix cover or starter heat shied rattling against headers. It even sounds a little like very loud valve rattle, but as you say, truck continues to run fine with no change.

Does your truck have a two piece driveshaft?

Possibly a bad "carrier bearing" inside the 'Driveshaft Center Support.'

D9TZ-4800-A .. D/S Center Support Kit

Fits all F100/150's and some F250's from 1957 thru the 1990's.

The bearing inside diameter is: 1.37"

If you have the 2 piece drive shaft, theres a dust shield on the driveshaft in front of the carrier bearing that can rub the carrier when torqued .It can simply be bent away a little bit. When it rubs it makes the whole drive shaft ring loud.
