OK... I have the famous "gray steel rims" found on most Mazda and Ford Rangers. You know, the ones that do nothing but rust?
I would like to keep these rims instead of spending a ton of money for replacements. So, has anyone had experience painting this style of rim? If so what type of paint was used? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Sandblast and powdercoat them, or at least have an autobody shop apply some real automotive paint with hardener. I have a set of steel rims for my F150 that were done by a bodyshop and they still look decent 8 years later.
Great! Thanks Paul
That's a better suggestion thatn my Brother in Law's. He suggested "Tremclad" but the man works at G.M. in Oshawa so thats gotta tell you something.

I to have 2006 2w drive ranger, would like pick up two spare wheel to mount snow tires on. will older ford truck wheels fit? or would explorer wheels fit? please help me out.
e-mail is charliegsstt@yahoo.com thanks charlie.
I bought a used steel wheel and cleaned up the rust with rotary wire brushes and sandpaper. Sprayed it first with primer and then Rustoleum Professional High Performance black enamel paint. The wheel has the spare tire mounted on it and hangs under the truck. After a year and a half of Michigan salty winters it still looks good.
I second the POR-15. It is some good stuff and your wheels will never rust again after POR-15. One thing to be aware of is that POR-15 requires you to top-coat it if the surface will be exposed to sunlight.
Nah. You can use it yourself. You can paint right over the rust that is there, just make sure to remove and loose particles. You can buy it at auto parts stores. www.por15.com
We used it on the 75 Trans Am that we are restoring. We coated the undercarriage, floorpans, sub-frame, control arms, etc with it. None of that stuff will ever rust again.
One thing to be aware of is that the POR-15 will stay on your hands or any clothing if you should spill or make a mess. It also has a nasty strong smell.
