new DMV laws in NC
Anyone considering buying a vehicle 35 years old or older from another state and registering it in NC should be aware of recent changes at the NC DMV. Any such vehicles as well as "custom-built" vehicles will now be inspected and photographed by an officer of the DMV before a title will be issued. Custom built vehicles are defined as "motor vehicles completely reconstructed or assembled from new or used parts". I suppose that as long as the paperwork is in order and serial numbers and serial number plates are present and don't appear to have been tampered with one should have no problems , but it might be a good idea to check with the DMV beforehand.I believe that some subframe swaps remove the portion of the frame where the serial numbers are stamped and that might cause a problem , so beware.

That was enacted thanks to some top DMV official helping his buddies register their "FG kit cars" as antiques to avoid the yearly personal property tax and bypass the emissions testing. The inspection just verifies that the major portion of the vehicle was actually originally manufactured in the year it is registered as. They look twice at any all FG bodies with late model drivetrain and especially at unverifiable (title mill)titles. Many states that base their fees and taxes on the vehicle's value are revisiting this issue thanks to people like Floyd Cotterpin providing his customers with title mill titles at values 1/10 the price his same cars were bringing at B-J and other auctions.
