How to ID my engine

Where can I find information to id the casting #'s on the 429/460? I ordered a book from this site that I thought would help, but it only tells me how to break down the date codes. I have a D1VE block and D0VE heads. If I understand the things I have read on this board, The block is '71 and the heads are '70 material. Instead of rehashing the same thing again and again, can anyone recommend a book or site that will explain this to me?

How to ID my engine

take the oil pan off and look for casting #s on the crank

if its a Y2xx crank then its 460
if its a 4ua then its a 429 (Big Smiles here(i love them))

should help you out

d1ve block is good
dove heads is awsome next to the biggest/highest compression heads there is only Cobra Jet is bigger/higher

good job on getting a good one

either way with it being a 429 or a 460 will be a nice engine

the 429 will have more power due to stock pistons are flat tops and on a 460 dish pistons are stock

429 has higher stock compression means more power faster
it makes up for the cube loss

let us know what you got

good luck

How to ID my engine

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Oct-02 AT 08:32 AM (EST)]Dennis,
I bought the "1962-76 FORD Componet Build Date Manual" It has good info, just not what I was after. I also bought the book by Tom Monroe on rebuilding the 351 - 460 engines. Excelent info for any one interested.
FORDNUTTZ,
Thanks for the info. I kinda fell into this deal. It is in a truck that belonged to the company I work for. It had set unused for about a year. My boss called me one day and said he was trying to cut back on the insurance bill and asked if there were any trucks we were not using at the shop I manage. I told him about this one, and he said sell it. I told him I wanted it and he said give me $300 and its yours. Its in fairly good shape, but it needs a clutch and smokes a bit on start up.

That's a good book .
There is also the Ford Performance Book by Pat Ganahl
This one deals with all Ford engines though as opposed to jst the 385 series.
