Power surge in truck.

Power surge in truck.
My alternator went out about 8 months ago. So I replaced it with a rebuilt one from Autozone. Well shortly after I installed it, I got a voltage surge. The battery gauge would shoot up and the battery light would flicker. My voltage readout on my stereo equipment would read anywhere from 16-18 volts. Well it went away for a little while. Then came back as an intermittant problem. Starting last week it started doing it more often. I check all the connections and battery terminals, they all are tight. So I took the alternator back to autozone thinking it to be the culprit, and got it switched out for a brand new non rebuilt unit. Installed the new alternator and Im still having the same problem, tho its more frequent. I thought maybe it was a loose connection since it seemed to be rpm related, except its does it some times when Im just idling. I disconnected my stereo equipment just to make sure it wasn't part of the problem and it didn't help. Any Ideas?
Ps. The dash lights and headlights also flicker when this happens.
