I was just watching abarret-Jackson and for some reason I thaught of the 52. I have a bed I got for the 52 but it is to a 53, it has the block lettering instead of script. If I am correct the bed it self looks the same minus the bolt pattern for the fenders which can be fixed. But I am starting to get a little concerned because of my dad getting it insured we were told to get a registered appraisal for it. basically are the bed designs the same and I might have a mint 53 tailgate for sale. thanks Casey
I think that the sides are different between those years, the 53's sides are flat where the 52's has a ridge along the top and both ends. But don't quote me on that.
The '48-52 F-2,F-3 beds, called Express Box, are completely different than the newer beds. As stated, the boxes have raised sides and different fenders.
Actually the above drawing is from Nathan, 51dueller. I have a couple of catalogs with some great drawings but none have the '48-52 box. Still looking for the correct catalog.
Casey, I just looked in your gallery, is this the box you have or do you have a better '53 box?
Even if this box is in rough shape you'll be better off trying to restore it. Unless you can find a better one. No one makes a reproduction box for the bigger pickups. Dan Carpenter did at one time,http://www.dancarpenters.com/ . It was pretty close to the original but didn't have the raised sides, curved stake pockets or square holes in stake pockets.
The last I heard he stopped making them but as I advised a guy on the Yesterdays' Truck site, maybe if there is enough interest shown, he might concider making them again.
This is a page out of a Ford sales folder I have showing the deminsions of the two boxes:
I am assuming he is referring to the Express Box. It also states they'll custom make a bed, I wonder if that means he'll build an Express Box. If my assumptions are correct I am sure it's going to make a lot of guys happy, poorer, but happy.
I just put some pics of the 52 bed up. I think i'm going to do some talking with the blaster and welder. but the 53 is stored and is mint just not the one i need.
From the pictures the box doesn't look too bad. It's at least the best you're going to find. I started with a box in a lot worse shape. I blasted myself using a commercial air compressor and blew holes in it. I then stumbled upon a box being used as a trailer in a small town I was driving through:
I ended up patching it, more than I thought I needed:
After I had the box on the truck a number of years the seams are starting to rust so I found another box. I bought the box on this truck. It's from NM and is very solid but still needs some patching:
What I am trying to say is the box you have is probably the best you're going to find unless you find a place like Horkey who will build a custom box but that's going to cost big $$$.
When you have the box blasted have the blaster epoxy prime it ASAP so you don't end up with flash rust. You can always grind the primer off so you have clean metal to weld to.
I Think that I am going to go with attempting to salvage the bed. If all else fails I might have to take it to a guy up in New York state Dutch Comstock he does oldstyle metal work and has my orrigianal front fenders they will be done by the end of the month. So I think im going to try to salvage the orrigianal and do like you said blast and shoot then patch along the way.
