Trading my auto for a manual
I have a 99 cc powerstroke that is still running strong with 132,ooo miles but I know the auto tranny is getting weak so I have been real easy on it for about a year. A rebuild is in the near future but I wonder how difficult a swap for a 6 speed manual would be. I am mainly concerned with the ECM. I have never drived a psd with a strong shifting auto so I might like it that way but what do you guys think? Mike B.

The ecm from the auto will work for the manual. Drive shafts are the same(ex cab long bed 4x4) anyway. A buddy of mine did it. Everything is pretty much plug and play EXCEPT the tranny tunnel. The Manual is physically bigger and you must take the tranny tunnel from the donor truck. There is also a spacer ring between the engine and auto tranny that must be removed for the six speed to go in. He did it in a barn over about 2 weeks in his spare time. If you like your truck but want a stick, go for it.

The tunnel on the cab is different between a stick and an auto?.I can't imagine Ford would build two different floors for Superdutys depending on the type of transmission to be used. Are you sure about that 61 uni?
I also believe the PCM has to be different as the auto is controlled by the pcm and you would probably get tons of failure codes if the wrong PCM was used.
I think I'd buy a stick if that's what you really want.

i did a auto to manual swap. you need a manual pcm. the floor pan will have to be modified. the 6spd manual makes the 4spd auto look like a micro machine. the drive shafts are also different lengths. you will need an auxillary water temp gauge. indash one will no longer work. reverse lights will have to be rewired. a few other things besides the obvious but i dont remember. its been awhile. sorry.
