I have a 78 300 that i want to do some minor upgrades to. Will a split exhaust manifold (off what looks to be about an 88)give me more power? I remember someone on this list saying don't do the dual exhaust thing w/this motor. He also gave a max diameter for the exhaust pipe. Anyone rememeber what it was? I'm not looking for gobs of power, my Mustang will do that, I would just like my truck to be a little less gutless then it is now. The 300's a great engine but it won't get you anywhere fast in stock form!
Jayson ,
As long as the bolt pattern matches up to the block , which I believe it will , then you can use the split exhaust manifold . As for any power improvements .... its hard to say ? Maybe ? All engines need some backpresure on the exhaust flow and with the 300 I wouldnt go beyond 3in , 2 1/2 is plenty . What really restricts the newer 300's is the dual cat convertors and that water heater size muffler . Some folks have altered their cats, which I have, which makes 100% difference with low end torque and power . If you live in an area with emmisions testing you may want to stay away from doing that . There are several cat back exhaust systems that give gains in HP and torque that are street legal . The 300 was never designed to run fast , its a work horse , but with the right modifications it will run a lot better .

It is my understanding (and I have posted this elsewhere--under hot rodding--on this site) that the dual exhaust manifold is excellent on a six but should join into a single exhaust.
