Did EFI really hurt the 300??
More than once, I have heard that when the 300 went to EFI in 87, its power ratings went down. I always thought that it went up from (correct me if I'm wrong here) around 120 hp in '86 to around 145 hp in '87. I'm not sure about the torque ratings for either year. Anybody know for sure? The only efi'ed 300 I've driven was a '96.

Well, the stock ratings for the carbed 80-86 300's(for sure, older ones may make more power) are 126 hp@3600 rpm and 245 lbs/ft@2000, the FI trucks are rated at 150@3600 and 265@2000.
What has got me is the fact that the 66 240's were rated at 126 hp and 245 lbs/ft, but, I don't know for sure what the 300 was rated at back then, but one site I've seen rates it at 170 horses.

Can you say Pre-Runner??

It's kinda hard to compare factory claimed HP figures from before 1971 to after because right about this time they switched from gross figures (before '71) to net figures (after '71). I may be a year off one way or the other but it happened about this time. This was also the beginning of the energy crunch when fuel efficiency and mileage started to take precedent over performance and smog equipment and lower compression ratios came into being.

I believe EFI results in improved torque through increased volumetric efficiency. Also, those long intake runners are supposed to add a lot of torque, probably for the same reason. I feel my (former ) carburated '84 F150 was faster than my present '95 EFI F150, but they are geared differently and the '95 weighs 800 lbs more. The 84 had a 2.47 rear end and you could run 1st gear up to around 45 mph.
