Hi Guys, on sunday (dec.30) my 06 had a hard time starting again and the fault light came on and stayed on, took it to dealer this morning (dec31). They said it was the alternator not charging properly and this was the problem for the cold sart issue, they put a new one in on warranty, i hope this cures it. Have a happy new year everybody.

Will try another dealer for sure now as these guys don't seem to know anything more about my 6L powerstroke than i do.

When the yellow engine light comes on it is relaying a code from the computer that lets the techs know what is going on, my truck does not puff white or black smoke when it does start and runs normal after.
I had a cold weather start last year. It would start, then die after running for about 3 seconds, and would repeat. Only happened when 20 degrees or colder. A change to synthetic 5W-40 solved the issue. Hope that helps
Two winters ago mine did the same thing with no codes. One dealer accused my wife of clearing the codes and refused to fix it. I eventually took it to another one and found 6 injectors that were not firing when the engine was cold, once warmed up the truck ran great.
Now this winter been kinda rough when starting and had it reflashed to heat the injectors coils before starting and seems to have smoothed it out. Check out youtube for some 6.0 cold starts.
Took my 06 in this morningand they found the problem, one of the main fuses was losing power during startup, they have to replace the whole fuse box to fix it, thanks for the replys & tips guys. off to the bush in northern alberta for24 days. I think this is a great website and will be checking in when i get home.
Hi all. I have an '04 6.0L and live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The coldest it gets here is about +28 degrees at night, and when it does it's big news. Last night was our coldest yet and when I went to start the truck it was about 35 degrees. Cranked for a LONG time with TONS of white smoke pouring out the tailpipe. I've had to hookup one of those emergency jump-start batteries just to get it started (after both batteries ran out of juice from cranking). This has happened to me many times recently. I have a new alternator (+/- 6 months), two new batteries (+/- 6 months), fresh 5W-40 Rotella T synthetic, just changed fuel filters and drained water two weeks ago (trying to solve this problem). I don't use a block heater because the daily average in January is 61 degrees. I bought this truck last December and did not have this problem last winter at all. I've had some hard starting problems also in recent weeks when it's quite warm (like 70 degrees) when I havent driven the truck for a couple of days. I'm an experienced technician with gas engines, but this is my first diesel so I'm hoping that I can soak in some knowledge here. Any ideas will be much appreciated. I'll call my local dealer and ask about it as well.

Did they happen to tell you what fuse they found was loosing power? Thats something I would like to check myself with a meter one morning when I think it will act up.
Wierd. wounder if it has anything to do with the glow plugs...
Every once in awhile my '04 cranks for awhile. I have no problem noticing the smoke when it is cranking or after it starts as it fills the cab to the point of not being able to see out the windshield. Great way to start off your morning, and we haven't been below 10* F yet this winter.
