Im looking at getting a 99 ford ranger 4.0 and was wondering about the motor and other quirks. It has 95k miles on it and is in basically perfect condition. Just need to know some basic info on how long the engine and auto transmission last and how the body holds up.
Thanks for any info!

200K miles or more if you take care of it. The 4.0 is very powerful. The auto trans is another story I have heard mixed reviews about the trans. I personally will never own another auto equipped vehicle ever. Just my choice but i have seen several 99 rangers around here for sale with 130000 + miles on them. They dont stay in the paper long. Very popular vehicle.
At 95k, it should be on it's 3rd and final overhaul, may it R.I.P. HA HA
How long anything lasts, depends on how it was taken care of, it may last a week or it may last for 30 years. The bodies recieve a good deal of corosion protection from the factory and will last 10 years and longer even in the salt states before showing any signs of rust as a rule. The engine is like a timex, just keeps ticking. The auto tranny like any automatic depends on prior abuse and maint. Over all, the ranger is a good sturdy package thats tried and true.
I'd say they are a very tough little truck. I replaced both heads at 140k. Besides that proprly maintained they could last a long time. The tranny could have used a better valve body imo. I am too lazy to replace mine(valve body) too damn cold lol.
My trans failed at 140K or so. The engine is still running perfectly. Any used vehicle is a risk in terms of a major failure. Try and get it for a price that, if you had to replace or rebuild a trans (1800-2500$), you wouldn't feel too bad about it.
Sorry I do not have the auto, but I do have the 4.0L. It is still running strong, I got it in '00 with 40K on the clock, and now it has near 170K. The only heavy repair I have had to do to the engine was replace the intake gaskets last year. I was using this truck for a 180 mile a day commute for about 18 months, but now that gas is so cheap I have had to resort to smaller engine commuter. Very reliable, has never left me walking.
