Guess while I was gone running around this weekend Shadow and Ben were outside playing. They like to play hard and jump up at each other. Shadow came up lame. He wouldn't put any weight on his left rear leg. Took him to the vet this mornin and left him for x-rays. They called this afternoon and Shadow had torn his ACL. They are fixin it today and I hope he'll be home tomorrow. Ben has been a mess without his buddy Shadow.
Eight maybe? Big dogs don't seem to last as long as little guys. Ben has been good for him this last few years. He is in pretty good shape. He should have some good years left in him. Margaret called this afternoon and talked some more with the vet. He said Shadows hips are in really good shape. Shadow is a Black Lab and they are know for hip problems. Vet said when I talked to him that the knee won't come back all the way but it should be almost pain free and useable. Hope we can get Ben to leave him alone enough to heal.
Ouch in two ways. One for your shadow's pain and two for your pocket book. My kids' dog ended up with a bad knee, but elected to no do surgery because the dog also had bad hips and they eventially had to have him put down. They really hated to do it, but couldn't afford to spend 2 or 3 thousand for an older dog to buy a year or two.
I hope Shadow has 3-4 years left. Just not ready to let him go yet. Shadow was eating well and movin around on one rear leg doing all he could to get Bens food. Didn't seem to be in a lot of pain. If he had other problems and and was in a lot of pain I would not make him suffer. Ben has had a hip rebuilt and is on meds for that. Maybe we need to cut down Bens meds a bit to slow him down to Shadows speed.
I don't know what they'll do for recovery. They said he was pretty sore yesterday. I'm leaving town today and I don't know if I will be able to pick him up before I leave or not. He was getting around on just 3 before.
Bet he's the most happy to be home. He's been sleeping is the report I have. He was by the kitchen this mornin so I gave him some canned dog food. He was hungry.
