High idle every morning...

I just put a new remote start on my truck which will run for upto 20 minutes. Every morning that I go out, the damn engine is running about 1300 rpm. Is this the regen I've been hearing about? If so, why so often?

You will know it is in regen if you put your foot on the brake while it is in park and the idle goes down.

Really? Don't the 6.4s also have the cold idle up strategy like the 6.0s and 7.3s? They also drop to low idle when you step on the brake.

Yes the 6.4's have the cold weather idle up strategy, just like the 6.0L and the 7.3L. Kicks in at temps of 32 F or lower.

That's a good question. I have had both the 6.0 and the 7.3 and I have never noticed a high idle in the morning. I live in Southern California, so it probably never got cold enough. I would also like to know if 6.4's have the cold idle up strategy.

the cold idle strategy is usually 1k rpms and no higher.

excessive regens will take place if the truck is idled for extended periods. look into doing a idle kicker mod to shorten warmup times and will do fewer regens in the long run.

Question

The cold weather idle on my truck is less than 1000 rpm. The idle is elevated but not excessively high. On the other hand, regen will run 1200 rpm in neutral. Is the regen idle in neutral too high?

That poses a interesting question. If you were to start a truck in temps 32 or below and the truck needed to do a regen, what strategy would the truck default to or would the two work together?

I wired my 08 psd cc to high idle in the morning manually. I do this to avoid wet stacking which can be a problem here where I live (Alaska). Mornings have been gettting cold below 20f. I wired to one of my upfitter switches and it works like a charm. I also plug in religiously, this really helps the psd on cold starts, trucks starts much easier and warms up faster.

Normal regen is 1100 - 1200 RPM in neutral or park according to Ford.

regens are upmost importance. it will regen first, but probably by the time it is done the truck will be warm anyways.

Mine got stuck in idle regen and did it for 4 days. It would idle as normal when first started in the morning, but after about 2 minutes, it would go into the 1200 rpm idle and when I put my foot on the break, it would go down to around 700 rpm, then right back up. Blew white smoke all day.

The reflash with the most recent code and a reset of the dpf sensor solved the problem. No smoke of any kind since (not even black, and I was getting some of that, too).

What is a "reflash"...is this something the dealer should do under warranty?

I don't know if the 6.4 is different than the 6.0 in regards to this but my 6.0 has idled as high as around 1200 rpm. It was clearly over a thousand rpm and basically on the next line which is 1250 but it was a smidge below it.
