Wiper delay conversion?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so forgive me if this has been addressed before. I've had a '67 F-100 that's in pretty good shape for about 10 years. In my opinion one of the best things about these trucks is the lack of bells and whistles. I hate it when my car beeps and scolds me for driving to the mailbox without my seatbelt on! Anyway one modern advance I do wish my truck had is a delay switch on the wipers. Is there some sort of conversion kit available and is this worth doing? Thanks.

Welcome to FTE!

It is much the same as the 61-66.

Making them work requires a minor modification for the washer pump.

I glanced at the article that Dennis linked and saw more than I thought was required. IMHO

I have delays on my truck, and used a two speed wiper motor from one of my 76 donors. You have to swap the old arm with the new donor motor to get it to park right. The rest was plug and play and can be used from many Ford products (vans, trucks, & cars) that might have a rotating ****. Unplug all of the wiring including the 2x2x2 cube that is part of the system from the donor (don't cut anything). Since I started writing this, something about unplugging the existing switch from it's harness and plugging the delay into it is kicking in. Everything will plug back in together in your truck.

The washer motor wire can either be moved to the new switch or if you have a push button left where it was.

delay wiper

You can use a delay switch from any 78 to maybe a 91 F series, I believe. To verify a delay switch at the wreckers, look for one that will do about half a
turn counterclockwise in addition to the regular clockwise three positions. This switch is unique to the delay system. The timer box/harness joins the switch to the main harness; it has a red plug. The 78-79 setup is a direct plug and play. If using a switch from an 80 and newer truck, you have to move one wire in the timer harness to main harness plug to get the washer to work. Sure makes a big difference in light rain.

Thanks Mike and John. This sounds a little more my speed and worth the trouble! I sure enjoy communicating with others that think these old trucks are worthwhile. I tried to sell mine awhile ago but just couldn't bear to part with her.

Mike, I think one of the big differences also is rotating switch vr. sliding. I think the one that you are referring to had a separate washer switch, right??

On the 67-up wiper switches, John, the washer is operated by pushing on the ****. This reminds me of something else -the shaft can be shortened on the newer switches to match the headlight switch height on the older trucks.

First off,. that Black box is called: the Governor or Speed Governor

The governor changed a bit in 1977 and basically remained the same until 1986, AFAIK

You can see the subtle difference and part stamping numbers thru the years.

Female connector .

the male counterpart is identical

I added delay wipers to my 70 with a switch from an 86. I removed the old switch and shortened the 86 shaft so it looks factory. Dremel tool came in handy there. Plugged in the new switch with the governor and put on the bezel and ****. Don't forget the ground wire. Works great! Simple swap. You can find these switches on Ebay often. Sometimes they have the **** and bezel with them.
