292 starting problems. Ford F100
I recently bought a 1964 Ford F100 with a 292 in it. I have worked on the engine replacing the spark plug wires, spark plugs, rotor, points, coil, starter relay, alternator, voltage regulator, hoses, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, and the gas. The last time its started was around 3 years. We tried to start it and all we got was backfire through the carburetor. We checked the firing order and it was all correct. We tried it again and got the same thing, backfiring through the carb. alot now. Now i am wondering what is wrong with it now. Any suggestions would help.

Are you using the Y Block cylinder numbering sequence? See below.
Distributor rotation is counter-clock-wise.
Are timing gears correctly installed? Timing marks toward drivers side and 12 chain links between them?
TC
F 1 2 3 4
A
N 5 6 7 8

I got my '64 F100 with a 292 in it a couple years back. It had been sitting in an old mill for 15+ years.
It pretty much fired right up! Wasn't too pretty, but after replacing stuff like plugs, distributor, oil, coolant, gas, coil, cleaned carb, manifold, etc. it ran very very strong all things considered!

resistor/coil
System is designed to use a 6 volt coil for normal running. A wire connected to one pole of the solenoid goes to the coil so when starting there is 12 volts to the coil and a hotter spark sent to the plugs. When ignition switch returns to run, the solenoid drops out and the voltage to the coil goes through the resistor dropping to 6V to return to the normal spark voltage.

ok. on the firewall, there is a rubber trailer looking plug over by the brake master cylinder. it is a two pronged plug. there is like three wires that go into it and two wires that come out of it. one is white/red tracer and the other is red i think. the red one goes to the temp sender. the white with a red tracer goes to the positive side of the coil. there is a wire that comes out of the side of the dizzy, that goes to the negative side of the coil. . the power wire to the coil is a resistance wire. from my understanding, the resistance wire is in the dash wire loom. hope this helps now. this is how its wired on my 64. just take that into consideration as to colors.

I understand that you have your 292 running again. Great! It might be a good Idea to replace your points with a Pertronix Ignitor. This worked very well on our '63 F100, in combination with a new Flame Thrower coil we got it running even better, on idle and while accellerating.
Too bad we had to sell our nice F100, but no worries; we now own a '68 Torino GT! Jiehaa!
Anyone interested in used but good and usable 292 Y-block parts? Just mail me. Still got lots of good parts in my barn. Might be a little expensive though, shipping a crankshaft or even an empty 292 engine housing from Amsterdam to the US haha.
Greetings,
Spike
