Unofficial Towing Fuel Mileage Comparison
Three trucks, three identical 24' box tandem axel trailers. They weighed between 5200-5700 # and I'm not sure who had which.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
All were crew cabs<o></o>
<o></o>
2005 SD 4X4 short bed 5.4 Gas (tow haul mode) 87 octane flashpak tune, soft tanneau, 373 gear<o></o>
<o></o>
2003 Chevy 4X4 1500 Short bed 5.7 (chipped & aftermarket dual exhaust, don’t know what tuner) hard tanneau<o></o>
gear unknown. Probably about 373 as our performance was so close in acceleration etc. and it was turning about 2100 rpm at 72 as was mine in od.<o></o>
<o></o>
2008 SD 4X4 8'bed diesel, stock, full high cap , 410 gear (I was told)<o></o>
<o></o>
We had to fill up about every 160 miles as the Chevy had a 20 gal tank<o></o>
<o></o>
the Chevy averaged 9.3mpg<o></o>
the 5.4 SD (my truck) averaged 10.2<o></o>
the diesel averaged 8.9 (its only got 4500 miles)<o></o>
this trip was 550 miles with about 450 on the interstate and we were running within 5mph of the the speed limit. Max of 72-74 on the interstate and mostly flat to rolling hills of I 75 from N Atlanta to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1lace w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Tallahassee</st1:City> <st1:State w:st="on">FL</st1:State></st1lace> and back<o></o>
<o></o>
The diesel seemed to be able to accelerate quicker than the Chevy and Me, but I drive like a grandpa anyway and didn't use all of the pedal.<o></o>
<o></o>
I've been reading about the poor fuel mileage on the 08 but I didn't expect to beat it with my gasser. Unless the thing really picks up after more miles, it is not nearly where the old 7.3 we had was. It feels more sluggish than the old 7.3 also. Ford needs to send an update out to pep that beast up.<o></o>
