I'm lost - need help...429/460 rebuild

Hello all, <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o> </o>

I’m glad to meet everyone and would like to say thank you in advance for the help you will all provide me. I got my first project the other day. A 1966 F100 with a 429 Thunderjet, I think. That is what the guy told me i got it from Him..

I join the forum because I need help, I’m trying to rebuild this engine but can’t buy part until I find out what it is I have.<o></o>

<o> </o>

So if someone would be kind enough to help me out I would really appreciate it. I’m new at this and this is my first project. Once again thank you for your help.

My Block number is C9VE-B the Crank number is a 4U also with the number 15 16 on it. The engine has been bored .030 and I think the guy mess up when installing the bearings. The engine was knocking and the guy said oil pressure was lost he shut it off and pulled the engine since then it has been sitting in the back of the
truck.

We took the engine apart and the only problems that I found besides it being dirty and some rust on parts, was that the bearings on the crank had some groves in them, and the oil pump had an old zip tie that was broken up in it. There was no metal in the oil and the pistons and the wall were smooth ( no ridges on the walls of the block at all).

Anyhow, I looking for help in identifying the engine so that i can buy the right parts. <o></o>

<o> </o>

<!-- / message -->I utilized the information provided on the internet, but I’m still not sure what engine I have. As an educated guess I would say that it is the 429 thunderjet not a CJ.

So I thought that I would list all the number I could find and see if I could get a definite answer. I can’t order any part until I find out what it is. I’m new at this so I don't want to get the wrong parts, I need your help.

Block number that I could find
C9VE-B and 0J106520

Head numbers -- DOVE-A

Crank number 4U

Once again I would like to thank everyone in advance for any help you can provide.

John<o></o>

You have a 1968-1978 429 by the engineering numbers.,

What are the actual Date cast numbers ?

They will look something like this
* 1K20 *

on the heads you will find them in the Oil Galley

On the block they will be down near and up from the starter on the side of the block

For rebuilding this engione I suggest getting a copy of HP Books How to rebuild your Ford V8 by Tom Monroe

ISBN-0 89586-036-8

You can find them at most auto parts stores

The only number that i can find on the block are C9VE-B, 0J106520 and 460 stamp in 3 other locations. There is nothing else at all. As For the Heads the only the number in those besides the DOVE-A were 9F4 and 9G7.

Thanks you for you help, I hope this helps you more.

based one the head and block casting numbers you most likely have a early 1970 429. But thats almost more info than you need to rebuild it.

Thank you, one last question with the super stock rebuild kit, 10.5-1 compression and performance cam with the eldabrock performer 460 intake what size carb should I get? (650 cfm or 750 cfm)

Once again thank you.

9F4 and 9G7.

The heads were cast on June 4 1969, and July 7 1969 respectively.
so obviously they were put in a late 69 (July) or early 70 ( August-Sept)

honestly on a street driven 460 being it's rarely if ever over 4000rpm I tend to like to stay smaller carbed. A 600-650 works just fine. Yes some guys will come in and say go with a 750 but you really don't need it unless your racing or pushing it hard all the time, and the smaller carb will get you a little more low end and won't really start running out of air until around 5000rpm which is about where most guys limit them anyway.

I use an Edelbrock 600 cfm on my 460. Power sucks, but could be due to the stock iron intake manifold. My engine is clean as a whistle and tight, but just not the monster you would think a 460 to be. Can't spin the tire(s), even with 3.25 open ratio and timing at straight up. But, it gets me around reliably, if it's not too hot out. (and that's WITH a new water pump and super cooling 4 core rad!)

It is a Ford, so it will run forever.
