The '91 uses and A4LD semielectronic shift.
The '98 uses either an 4R44E or 5R55E fully electronic shift
Why would you want to downgrade?
What is wrong with your current trans?

Bear River! It is easier to install '89 tranny. To twist wires is easier. To connect 2 solenoids only and to terminate 2 unused wires with resistors. I did it.
ECM of '98 ranger shifts 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 (OD) and locks TC.
There are no 1-2 and 2-3 solenoids in old trannies but OD and TC clutch. Use them!
On newer trucks OD may be applied not only with direct gear (3) but with 2nd and that's why they are 5st autos....
5R55E may easily be installed on old engine, but with newer ore self-made ECM. 2 ecms work parallely, one for engine, other for tranny.
