My 4x4 didn't work 1st winter storm of the year. Did a recently replaced wheel hub assemble ( front right) have any connection with the 4x4?
It got towed recently because a bolt was missing out of the brake caliber and the disk came out and caught the wheel rim. The mechanics towed and repaired that free of charge. I'm concerned that this could be related, but I'm not a mechanic! Thank You, Karen
Karen,
It is possible that it may be related to your recent wheel hub replacement. If they weren't careful during the reassembly, it's possible you may have a vacuum leak. The problem I had with my 4wd was when I had a cv boot replaced, the mechanic cracked the housing of the lock-hub causing a vacuum leak and no 4wd.
It's also possible that the disk coming out may also have caused some damage. Check the lock-hub for damage. It's the black plastic cylindrical thing in the centre of the wheel. You can see it quite clearly by just removing the hub cap.

Thanks for your reply Matt. Today I took it into the mechanic and he said it needed new Locking Hubs. Also he said that this was a set of Hub Locks that Ford used one year and it was a bad year so Ford changed to different hubs after that. He was surprised they hadn't gone bad yet. I picked this up off of EBay and it came from done south in Santa Claus, IN so the 4x4 might not have been used much. I will follow your above directions and see if I they are damaged or cracked before I take it back in. If I see they are cracked and damaged, can this just happen and not be the mechanics fault or should I just come right out and ask if this was because of wheel hub assemble? and then caliber bolt missing or falling out? As a woman, I try my best not to be taken advantage of!!

Leaky seals can happen over time, but physical damage of the lock-hubs themselves is unlikely unless they get whacked by something. Did the 4x4 work before you took it in to have the wheel hub replaced? If it did, it should have worked when you took it home. Ford has a tsb which states that replacing the luck hubs is not usually the correct repair for a malfunctioning PVH system - more often the problem is a vacuum problem.
