94 /94 and up 7.3 differences
Hey all,
I've been looking for a 94-97 Powerstroke for a while now, and have finally found one that's suitable to my needs. Only problem is that I think it's an early '04 model and doesn't have the direct injection on it. Until today I had no idea that the 94's were any different. Thankfully I know the owner and he mentioned the injection difference.
I'm buying this truck as a long term vehicle that I plan on using as my daily driver and to tow my Jeep around (on a car-hauler) during camping vacations and to 4x4 events. I had planned on doing an intake, exhaust, and a mild power program (such as the Edge products).
So I have a few questions regarding this. Can the non-powersroke '94 diesels be chipped? Are the stock power levels the same as post '94 7.3's? Are the auto trannies the same? Could the early 7.3 be easily swapped out for a direct injection 7.3?
Any info you guys might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Robb

ok... the non-powerstroked 7.3s are all mechanical i believe (good and bad)... the non-psd 7.3s have weaker everything i believe than the psds.... the power levels are different... by a decent margin i believe... both 7.3s will last forever... both will tow VERY well but the psds will tow better... and the psds are MUCH better at getting up to speed... the trannys, i don't know abuot them.... someone else will chime in with more info

Are the stock power levels the same as post '94 7.3's? IDI (indirect injection, older diesels) have similiar power levels stock but acceleration is much better on the Powerstroke. Also power upgrades are much easier and more effective on the PSD.
Are the auto trannies the same? They are the same trannies but the 94.5 and up PSD are a bit stronger
Could the early 7.3 be easily swapped out for a direct injection 7.3? No it would not be easy at all. The only way its really feasilible is if you had a donor truck and even then it would be a complete swap on engine, wiring, dash and a few other things

Thanks for your quick response guys, I really appreciate it. Few more questions though:
1: When do the late 94 (94.5)models begin?
2: Are the 94.5 complete powerstroke versions the same as the 95-97 powerstrokes?
3: How can a guy quickly tell the difference between the two visually?
Thanks.

2: Are the 94.5 complete powerstroke versions the same as the 95-97 powerstrokes? yes the 94.5 engines are the same as the 95-97. The 94.5 will only be manual trans trucks.

all 94 powerstrokes are 5 speeds.
the 8th digit in the vin is an F not a K. K=IDI/ f=PSD<---- the one you want
