1994 F350 Diesel

Hey all,

I've been looking for a 94-97 Powerstroke for a while now, and have finally found one that's suitable to my needs. Only problem is that I think it's an early '04 model and doesn't have the direct injection on it. Until today I had no idea that the 94's were any different. Thankfully I know the owner and he mentioned the injection difference.

I'm buying this truck as a long term vehicle that I plan on using as my daily driver and to tow my Jeep around (on a car-hauler) during camping vacations and to 4x4 events. I had planned on doing an intake, exhaust, and a mild power program (such as the Edge products).

So I have a few questions regarding this. Can the non-powersroke '94 diesels be chipped? Are the stock power levels the same as post '94 7.3's? Are the auto trannies the same? Could the early 7.3 be easily swapped out for a direct injection 7.3?

Any info you guys might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Robb

1. No
2. No
3. I think they're the same
4. I doubt it.

Is this a non turbo or a turbo engine?

The 7.3 IDI was mechanical, so no electronics whatsoever.

I bought mine just for that reason.

If you must have a powerstroke, keep looking.

Personally, if it's a good price, I'd say buy it and put a turbo kit on it.

Yuppers, it's a turbo model from the plant. I'm being told that the power doesn't even compare to the powerstroke though. How do you like yours? Do you do any heavy hauling?

Ha, who told you the power doesn't even compare?

In '94 the powerstroke had 20 hp more than the turbo IDI, and maybe 50 ft-lbs (I can't remember the '94 PSD's rating). I'm pretty sure the PSD makes its power a little higher on the tach. The advantage of the PSD is that it's a lot more upgradeable than the IDI, since it can be chipped, plus it can run a lot more boost as it has a lower compression ratio.

I honestly just got mine maybe a month ago and have not driven it much. It has awesome bottom end but you could definitely feel it running out of breath past about 2500 RPM. Stock for stock it felt pretty comparable to a '97 PSD I drove a few months ago.

It's currently down because I'm installing an ATS upgrade kit so I can run a 3" downpipe, 4" exhaust, and turn up the fuel a bit.

There isn't a huge aftermarket for these things, but from what I've read you can make them pretty respectable.

What's he asking for it?

Uh.......a turbocharged IDI diesel can eat a stock 1st gen powerstroke for breakfast with minor mods, and as the moderator here can tell you, can even be built up to run with the best.

My old 6.9 has put the odd powerstroke in its place before, and my turbo doesn't even work very well.

The reason why the IDI turbos had lower power output was because ford wanted to sell the new powerstrokes, and had the older IDIs detuned.

Get a bigger downpipe, put in some gauges, and turn up the fuel. What you end up with is a truck that is more reliable, gets better fuel economy, and is cheaper to repair than a powerstroke. Oh, and consider building up your tranny, if its automatic, you want more power, (this is true for the powerstrokes as well).

FOURTEEN THOUSAND dollars? Are you kidding?

I don't think I'd pay that much even if it were immaculate.

14000 is way tooo much for that truck even if its perfect. http://autos.msn.com/kbb/ is a link you should punch the details into to find fair market value., Will give you a realistic view of where to start negotiating.

yeah well, it's alot better than $67'000 for a new one, LOL! I've been wawtching these things for sale for quite some time now, and they're going between $10500 and $20000 for minty ones.

Don't forget that I'm in Canada. $$$ are different up here.

It really depends on how much you are willing to spend for it, and how badly you want it. If it has good service records, then I would consider it, but definately try to bring the price down.

I bought a 94 7.33 IDI Turbo Crew Cab 4x4 with a Gear Vender . The seller had it listed for 13K with 150K on the Odometer. I offered 10K and he turned it down. 2 months later he called me back and asked if I still wanted it. I offered him 8K this time and he took it. Be patient and keep looking, you will find what you want.

That is about the price that a 1997 Power Stroke crew cab dually F350 4x4 with all the options should be bringing if the mileage is around 120,000.

That must be a show room condition truck.

I believe the got their value by calling it the PowerStroke when it really wasn't. There is a significant price jump when you add the name Powerstroke. Rerun the truck through KBB and make sure you choose IDI. I live in central Illinois where everything is rusted to pieces and I know of 2 96 PSD's, one crew cab and one supercab, both in very good condition for less than what he is asking for the IDI.

Well, when I was still looking at my truck...there wasn't that big of a difference in book value between the PSD and the IDI. I think around $1500-2000 for identical trucks.
