Clunk shifting out of 4x4 low.

Clunk shifting out of 4x4 low.
With a 2002 F150 electric 4x4 shift, once in 4x4 low is it okay to stop put, the tranny in neutral, and then set the control to 4x2?
Or is it necessary to first shift to 4x45 high and then to 4x2?
I went directly from 4x4 low to 4x2 in neutral and then went into drive and started moving. It seemed to still be in 4x4 low, although the indicator lights went out, and then I hear a really low clunk as it seemed to disengage back into 4x2.
Could I have done any harm hear?
This is my first Ford with the electric shift.
Love the truck!
Thanks for you expertise,
