Thumbs up Repack Front Bearings, A Forgotten Task!

GUYS, just a reminder to make sure your Aerostar's front wheel bearings, see preventative maintenence. Many people ignore this, and just wait until front disc pads need replaced. Sometimes that works, sometimes not.

Saw a Chevy Astro van today, on the freeway, with the LF tire angled grossly in a "toe-in" look. Obviously a failed wheel bearing, and no doubt ruined the Astro driver's day, especially if he had his wife and kids in that mini-van.

Repacking, front wheel bearings is a simple task, and takes 30 minues, thats taking your time. Plus, properly lubricated front wheel bearings help your Aerostar achieve good MPG, and will never leave you stranded. Always toss the old grease seals, and use new grease seals on every repacking job.

Failed wheel bearings = "Call to the AAA Tow-Truck man". Don't risk it, especially in winter weather!

It is amazing, I have stock front bearings. With more then 650 K.

To save bearings remove rotor twice a year, wash bearings with gas, and lubricate agane. Have front wheels well balanced. I installed small nozzle for lubrication in bearing cap and I lubricate it as frequantly as I can.

Well, new cars and trucks are designed to drive w/o periodical lubrication, but going back to old traditions I reccomend to install nozzels for greese everywere U can. Pay attention for pards with life-time lubrication. Lubricate all, wheel bearings, U-joints, ball-joints, CVs as frequantly as you can. My grandfather told me, that engine that leaks oil lives twice longer, becouse driver has to add fresh clean oil. Many old russian trucks with R6 ore V8 engines had usual for Ford V8 engines problem - leacking main crankshaft seal and noboby wanted to drop tranny and oil-pan to replace it. So a small puddle of motor oil was usual for GAZ-51/52/53 and theirs engines ran, ran and ran....

To do it right you have to repack both: inner and outer wheel bearings. Doing the inners usually involves replacing the seal.

were these Russian versions of the Ford Y block 256 272 292 312 ci engine from the 1950's. we called them grease *****, leaked oil would pick up the ranch dust. engine tranny and whole underneath coated in an inch of greasy oil dust muck.
you could drive one for years on an ocean beach in the salt water, nothing rusted below the door handles

It's unbeliveble, but sometimes I see old trucks of 50-70s on road with old big L6 ore V8 engines made of alluminium....
I found easlily pics of them in internet....

Yeah, old trucks were more reliable, then modern.....

Russian versions of old ford engines differ. Theirs blocks and heads are made of alluminium.

Russia and Ukraine have all that cheap aluminum and hydro power
we had cheap iron ore and the car companies built huge steel mills in the 1950's

must use cast iron or steel cylinder liners in the alum. block? dry or wet liners

american autos and trucks used to be built with grease fitting on every slow speed bearing and suspension joint that wasn't rubber mounted
now, seldom find any grease fittings on American made cars, built to drive and throw away. grease fittings started disappearing in the '80s.
even remember grease fittings on water pump shaft bearings
used to be large number of chain drive hvy trucks here, had to use the grease bucket and mop every day on the chain and drive gears

I use to add greese fittings to new trucks :-)))). New Euro-3 requirements make fitting disapeare, becouse greese may leak down on a road! Funny!
