3.73 Pros and Cons

What are the pros and cons with the 3.73 gear ratio on a 04 F-250 FX4 CC
V-10?

Thanks in advance,
T

PS: John, thanks for the OASIS report.

3.73s will give you the bets mileage you can get gear wise, but will also give you the lowest towing capacity. It all depends on what you want to do. If you tow a lot, tow often, or want to lift the truck and add bigger wheels you would want different gears. 4.30s are the best for the V10 IMO, but I have 3.73s and have not had any trouble with them.

I have 3.73's in my truck and they're fine, even for towing my cattle trailer fully loaded which I estimate to be in the neighborhood of 15k. They leave something to be desired from dead stops but once you're rollin there isn't much difference, I have been in a truck with 4.30's and they were better for taking off but past that there's not much difference on the highway. both trucks had 4r100 transmissions.

I like my 3.73's as I can tow fairly heavy and still maintain decent mileage on the highway by taking it out of overdrive while maintaining good highway speed at decent rpm's.

That depends on how you are going to use your 'beast' of a truck.

I don't tow heavy much, if at all (yet), so I have no need for anything more than 3.73's.

The only time I need a lot of gearing is playing around in Upstate NY, pulling trees, stumps, whatever. But then I just put it in 4LOW and have basically a 10.8:1 gearing

I do, however, have one of the few V10's that get 17MPG on the highway with 285/75R16 tires (bigger diameter than stock by about 1.2 inches). (yes, hand calculated, GPS checked for mileage, etc)
