glazing or blowby? on 292

i have a 292 stock rebuild in my f100. recently started to "smoke" and sputter oil out of a smal hole ontop of head on the back side of the passenger side head. what is this hole? it is threaded and was told it was a possible freeze plug? dunno tho. why would this engine be doing that all the sudden. fully stock has 2 barrel manifold with an adapter plate on it for my 600 cfm edlebrock. possible glazing or blowby? heard of a glazing trick of putting bout 2 teaspoons of somthing that is basically ajax or comet in thru carb at about 2000rpm and it would rescuff the cylinder walls. think it was called basome? dunno kinda leery bout the idea. He also said to put a junk carb on it during this procedure and change spark plugs.

You can thread a bolt into that hole. Forget the comet thing, you'll be fine.

That hole intersects with the pushrod hole which is why it's 'sputtering' oil out of it. Like 312 said, just put a short 3/8X16 bolt in it and you'll be fine. That hole is there so when you use the head on the other bank, the front intake bolt can go into it. Otherwise it's typically not used unless you use it for connecting a ground strap to the body.

Are running a road draft tube or a PCV? Gotta have one or the other functioning properly or you will experience problems like you describe.

put bolt in hole oil stopped from there. now its trying to come out my dipsticktube and oil filler.thought maybe pcv tube was clogged.{my motor has a tube that runs from the valley pan cover to the front of the intake}. i undid the tube from the intake side and the intake is not clogged- it wud suck my finger to it. then i shut off engine and blew threw the tube into the valley cover and "smoke" came out of the oil filler and the dipstick. Engine runs fine, good oil pressure 10-20 at idle and 40 at cruising speeds; has always been that way. no smoke from exhaust. does smell a bit rich not much. have noticed slight drop in power tho.

If the pcv is working properly then, I'll ask what kind of oil you are using. a 15w-40 diesel rated oil is a good choice- like Shell Rotella or Chevron Delo.

Also, you mention that the engine had been rebuilt. Can you offer some details on that? Bored? Honed? Type of rings? You may want to try to seat the rings by making several full throttle runs from about 2,000 rpm to 4,500 rpm, each time letting off the throttle allowing the engine to return to 2,000 rpm- you get the idea.

I would still hold off on the cleanser...
