Changed oil and air filter = SMOKE???

I bought some Schaeffers 5w-40 and changed it with a K&N oil filter. I than started the engine with no airfilter because I cleaned my AFE air filter at the same time I was changing the oil and it was kind of wet so I did not want to put on the wet airfilter so I started it with no airfilter, trust me nothing got sucked up inside cuz I cleaned the airbox and I was right next to it.. So after I started it and got ready to shut it off after a minute I see a light with dots and an arrow on the top right side of the dash... I thought it would go away after the next day but it was still there the whole day even with the airfilter in, so I drove anyway. Nothing was wrong untill I noticed black smoke coming out of the pipe after a couple of hours. It wasnt a lot but enough that I could notice it in my rear view mirror a! I am guessing its the Oil or it might be the light thats affecting it. PLEASE DONT TELL ME ITS WORSE!

Your not missing the rag you used to wipe down the filter box are you? Not sure what light you are seeing but the new black smoke sounds like a possible air restriction.

Don't want to be a smarta$$ either but newfound black smoke can be air restriction. What are the lights again? I have never seen or heard of that.

someon else recently had the same light and it turned out to be a cloged air filter sign.Hence the air restrictin.I would take the air box off rite down to the tubo and make sure all is well.

My dad's 02 has that light and its a filter restriction light I would do as the others have said and check the box and tubes. After you check every thing disconnect the batteries and that should reset the light.

Wow Dave. That light is new to me, go figure. I will have to fire up the laptop and see if I can find it in the shop manual sometime tomorrow.

My 02 has that light I think . It could be the light above the check gauge light. I only notice it when you turn on the ignition other than that never had it come on. If he is talking about the light that has 8 dots with a arrow its the (Engine Air Filter ) light.

It's hooked to the air filter restriction gauge. Ever seen some ('02 & '03 IIRC) that have wires coming out of the restriction gauge? That light is what it triggers.
