I'm going to buy a new set of tires for my '92 Ranger and the standard size is P215/70 R14 and I was considering going to a P225/70 R14 for no other reason than I can get a better price than the standard and also that I like the looks of the particular brand of tire that I'm considering better. Now I've checked a tire chart comparison calculator and the difference in O.D. and effect on the speedometer is minimal.
My question is have anyone of you gone from the standard size I mentioned to the the slightly larger size and if so, did you have any problems with the ride and also did you regret doing it?
i got p 235 75 r15 a/t on my 92 ranger an im sure i can go bigger but those still ride good on the highway an off road i barly ever have to switch into 4 whell drive they get good traction if i get stuck i just get er to 3 grand in 3 gear an she comes right out
i have a 96 splash.2.3.5spd.2wd.i went from a 225/75/14 to a 30/950/15 mud king xt.i noticed about 2-3 miles per gallon loss in mpg.but better performance ooff road .when i changed the tires .my gear ratio went from 3.45 to 2.94 .better for highway bad for hills.when i go up hills i have to shift down to 3rd.tach reads 3300rpm .at 65.
im going to change the rear axle to a 3.73 from a explorer.that should make things better. on the engine.
i should have looked for more agressive 14 inch tires instead .
lol
I made the tire size change you are considering, I haven't noticed any performance or ride change. I do make a 2 percent adjustment when I calculate fuel mileage (calculated mileage times 1.02 = adjusted mileage). I make the same kind of adjustment for a speedometer reading.
You are only going 10mm wider and 7mm taller so the effect will be minimal on ride and mileage. You do gain a smidge of rotating mass but it shouldn't be much. I went from a 31x10.50.15 to a 32x11.50x15 and still saw no real effect on mileage and actually made speedometer read truer than factory since mine was about 4mph fast according to GPS and roadside radar posts. Now my speedo is about 2mph fast.
Well, I ended up sticking with the standard size tire and ended up buying some "el cheapos" from Discount Tire Co. At $47 ea plus $$$ for all the extras they add like balancing/old tire disposal/etc.
The tires are Kuhmo brand (Korean, made in China). Don't like the idea of buying foreign tires, but the 215 size for my '92 is not a common size anymore. I also found out that the new Firestones that I had put on about 5 years ago were 2 years in the warehouse before I bought them, so they were really 7 years old. No wonder they were out of round when I bought them.
These new tires that I just bought are smooth as glass and Discount Tire balanced them correctly the first time unlike the store where I bought the previous set.
I know a lot of people that have run Kuhmo tires and they all seem to like them pretty well. As far as foreign tires go......most are made elsewhere or owned by a foreign company. Michelin is the parent company of BFGoodrich and Michelin is a French company and Firestone/Bridgestone is Japanese. Many Asian brands on the market not to mention generic brands manufactured by major name companies. Dayton is part of the Bridgestone company for instance. Kuhmo, Nexen, Toyo, Nitto, Hankook, and many others are foreign but I believe that Goodyear is still an American company.
