DPF How they work & How to maintain

Here is a link to an article on how Diesel Particulate Filters work, how to maintain them and a truck equipped with them.

Interesting read.I'm assuming the ULSD will become the new standard-how will the 7.3 and 6.0 motors run on this blend?.Seems like with the price of diesel, initial cost of the engine, adding DK every tank and still getting only a couple of miles per gallon better than gas it a tough justification .I know crooks are stealing whole exhaust systems off new 6.4 trucks for the large amount of platinum the converter contains..the number I heard was in the $6k range to replace it from the exhaust manifold back.

Yes ULSD is safe for all diesel engines. Here are some links to more info on ULSD.

Not even close to justifying buying a gasser if you want to tow or haul anything above 3000 lbs. If all you are doing is driving around town and hauling light loads I might agree with you but when you need to tow anything heavy, a diesel is the only thing that really gets the job done. I know that gas vehicles have to drop their gears to get the same hp to torque ratios and then you get 4 or 5 mpg versus 8 to 10 on a diesel and you still do not have the sheer power. I guess its really about what you are going to use the truck for.

I haven't heard about this yet. I guess an alarm system won't help you much with this. Next everyone will have to get a low rider system installed so you can squat the truck down on the pavement when you park it.

I wonder how hard it will be to convince your insurance agent that your tailpipe was stolen?

This is a new one to me also, but I do believe that crooks are stealing the exhaust systems. Although I believe they are stealing them to sell as functional parts rather than for platinum. Converters typically only have a fraction of a ounce of platinum in them and extracting that would be nearly impossible.

The parts while not quite 6K are quite valueable on the street. The following are recent dealer prices on a few of the parts...

DPF - $1500
CAT - $1100
Muffler, Tailpipe and Tip Assembly - $750
