when points go bad......

how much is that petronix module (or whatever it's called) that replaces the points? is it a modification i should consider?

Absolutely! I had the exact same problem in my '65 240. I bought it from Summit Racing for a total of about $85. Cured all my ignition problems. Recommend the matching coil with it (think it was $30). The installation takes about 30 minutes and its pretty easy. Keep your plugs gapped at .035, just advance the timing (mine's set at around 15 degrees).
