Well, I had a bit of a scare today. I have a leak at the front of my transmission which I have largely ignored because I can just check it from time to time and top it off. Anyway, it wasn't much of a leak, just leaking maybe a spot or two once in a while.
Anyway, I took it in to have emissions done today, and since it is AWD they do the two speed idle test which is measured obviously at idle, and 2500 rpm. Anyway, while it was doing the 2500 rpm test, it began leaking out the front seal a lot, and dripped down onto the hot exhaust pipe and caught fire.
Anyway they quickly put it out and no serious damage occurred as the van itself did not catch fire, just some of the fluid that was running out. But it lost nearly 2 quarts in just that short period of time. And they were unable to complete the emissions test.
So anyway, I'm have that seal replaced, and probably several other issues with my transmission including that is starts in the wrong gear when shifted into OD from a stop. Otherwise the transmission is in good condition, so hopefully this doesn't break the bank too badly.
no fair setting the emissions test station on fire
that causes air pollution
glad all is ok
we have the 4 wdr double roller test equipment going in here now. we'll see just how balanced my AWD system is when I get everything spinning at 45 mph
betcha don't get out of the tranny shop for less than $1500, they have a set price. time for Christmas presents for the owner's kids
Thats probably true. But yeah, it didn't do anything other than singe the out wrap on the wire bundles. They might have to replace the shift cable, because it got a bit cooked and it might start binding. But everything seemed to be fine.
Well, it turns out the previous owner of the van ran the transmission on low fluid for a long time. The transmission needed a total rebuild. New bands, clutches, new torque converter, numberous parts in the valve body, new servo pistons, new rear sprag, boost valve, pump bushing, all seals, and new needle bearings, and a new governor.
And they had the transmission all taken apart so I did see that all these parts did in fact need to be replaced. The old torque converter was a deep bluish purple color, so that sucker really got hot.
Anyway, the total price tag to rebuild in and beef it up to handle towing and improve longevity was $2900. Ouch
bear,
with the heavy loads you carry, a real synthetic ATF such as Redline D4, Amsoil, Mobil 1 or Royal Purple would pay off in far longer transmission life plus a monster cooler.
one of the Transgo shift kits in the mech. A4LD is also a good investment along with the Sonnax valve body upgrade parts
I do have a good cooler, and a guage. The temperatures I measured would vary between 100 degrees and 150 degrees, depending on whether or not I was pulling a grade and what time of year.
I belive my trans mechanic did mention both Transgo and Sonnax while he was showing me the old worn out parts. But the invoice does not say what brand parts are being used.
During the initial warranty period I will be using conventional fluid, which is whatever the transmission shop is using. After that, I do plan to switch to a good full synthetic.
