Hey guys I tried the search function and didn't feel comfortable enough to make a decision, so I would appreciate some feedback.
I'm going to start doing oil changes on my '06 and Dad's '03 PSD. I have been looking at the Fumoto valves but I have a concern. We run a lot of cattle so we are out in pastures all the time.
Do you guys recommend the valve in these conditions? I'm afraid a weed or something might accidently open it. I've never been around one of them though, so I don't have any idea how stiff it is or anything.
Installed a Fumoto on mine at 1,000 miles. Currently have 36,500 miles and no issues whatsoever. I take it off road several times per year in soft and deep dirt, mud, rocks, tall and thick wheat grass, etc. You have to push fairly hard and then rotate the tab on the valve to open it. The tab is seated in a notch so it's not likely to open, or be forced open, by anything non-human.
As bismic stated, get the retaining clip they offer or put a small hose clamp around it.
Since it's made of a bronze material I could see it getting smashed into the pan... maybe. If you hit a rock that hard you would seriously damage something else under the truck anyway, probably the oil pan itself.
That's the main reason I ordered the model with no nipple, I was concerned it may get mashed shut.
I ordered my Fumoto Valve 4 months ago based on the advice of this forum. The valve works great. If you overfill a little, just open and drain to the proper level...no mess involved. The valve is rugged and well made. I think I paid about $32 delivered. Well worth the investment. Something would really have to smash that valve for it to break apart in my opinion. (my valve has the nipple)

Kepler4 said it very well, if you smash the valve or knock it off you've done alot of other damage to your truck as well. Just get the valve w/o the nipple on it.Also, most places you order from will include a spring clip with the valvethat fits into the "grove" the tab moves in. It takes a pair of pliers to squeeze the clip together so that you can get it off and then open your valve.
I've had mine on for a year now and love it, especially for the fact that I can take my Blackstone samples w/o any mess and at any time. Really great to have if your interested in extended oil changes......which I DON"T....but I've got issues with my truck, so I can send in a sample half way between oil changes and not have to drain out all my oil. Nice to be able to sample oil at 2500 miles and then change at 5000 miles.
There's no mess, no fuss, nice clean simple oil changes and you never have to hunt down the correct size socket or wrench to take a plug out, just a pair of pliers for the spring clip
